I think DTT *is* vastly more powerful in Cube environments. Cruise got the banlist hatchet in every format* because you can construct decks where 3 cards is more powerful than best-2-of-7 (not to mention the significant difference between U and UU mana with full delve) -- but in Cube it's not as...

i mean i like using bad analogies and unnecessary hyperbole, but i didn't know outright lying about easily googleable facts was the Surefire Secret To Success And Four "Like" Clicks in that case: ponder kicked my dog and loves all media related to guy fieri

part of the strength of ponder (in constructed) is that its "lock" situations can be mitigated by other cantrips (in the absence of fetchlands). ponder itself obviously has a built-in shuffle. preordain can bottom one or both of the put-back cards. thought scour does the trick (though i can't...

"constantly manage mana flood" is a pretty accurate synopsis of what i want out of the ponder/preordain slot, and why i prefer the latter :) -- delver (just the one card, not an archetype) is obviously a strong reason to prefer ponder (still assuming no fetches) -- you very much care what...

re: some other conversation somewhere about this guy that brought up stromkirk noble-- i think that stromkirk noble works in red because they have about a million ways to clear a t2 blocker and get your 1-drop up and running. green? it's more of a "well i hope they don't play anything" which...

ha my original reference to preordain (and it being my favorite cantrip for cube use by far) was in a really shitty bernie sanders joke and the other 'crux' of my ideas on blue cantrips was partially typed in all-caps and also contained the word 'hooey' i can see why this is going swimmingly...

fugue seems like a decent option at the same mana cost, and i have good memories of it from ancient (slow) draft formats... though i guess it's strictly worse than mind shatter

sorry -- this is just a fundamentally wrong assessment of magic cards, like saying wind-scarred crag is better than battlefield forge due to its life-gain it's not that hard to look back at a format that allowed 4 ponder, 4 preordain, but has zero fetchlands. it's m12 standard. here's a sample...

literally this entire paragraph can apply to brainstorm, and in fact every point you make applies BETTER to brainstorm since you can keep and instantly use all three cards if you put back some chaff cards that were previously sitting in your hand. no, that's my entire point. it has to be...

This is the fundamental misunderstanding/overrating of Ponder that I'm talking about. It's not 1-of-3, it's all three (one now and two later) or a blind re-draw. (again, speaking in the case of not having a fetchland or Land Tax or whatever to use)

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Speaking of warts, that's exactly how I think about Ponder. The re-draw is a huge plus over Brainstorm, but it's much closer than people generally consider since -- again thinking in absence of plentiful shuffle effects -- Ponder is "all or none" and not really "best of three". Brainstorm does...

Ponder without fetchlands suffers from basically the same problem as Brainstorm. A built-in shuffle is nice, true, but if you are digging for, say, a board wipe and see it? You're also getting the other two cards.

People at Eternal weekend tweeting about 93/94 MTG makes me wonder: at what casting and activation cost would we play this? Jayemdae Tome (I guess coercive portal is like a 4/0 but it enters tapped, for comparison)

which reminds me: one of the sadder moments in MTG was explaining to a 13 year old EDH player that his general Gabriel only gets ONE of those abilities per turn, not all of them.
