I have a feeling this blog post assumes a 360 cube (with no duplicates) as the standard, the way it talks about a lack of odds in a cube. I did some calculations (picking probabilities for a draw without replacement) for my 450 cube. If I include two copies of a card, there's ~64% chance that...

Sets (LTR) The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth

Hmm… agree to disagree? I think Start Your Engines, apart from having to use an external device (be it the designated “token” card or a die), vibes very well with the natural objective of games: getting your opponent to 0 life.

That is both true for all mechanics, and 20/20 hindsight. When Astral Slide premiered, it was the first time they brought back a set mechanic, and the last time we had seen it was in Urza’s block, 4 years prior. Barring Future Sight, it would take another 6 years before we saw cycling again in...

But I think that’s mainly nostalgia speaking. Like, old sets had these cards as well. Gimmick-y Tribal, if that’s what you want to call it, is not a new thing, it’s a proven design technique. Case in point: Astral Slide Quiet Speculation Saproling Infestation I think what Rasmus was talking...

I think these parasitic payoffs give a mechanic texture though. If all we got were generic LEGO pieces, the soul of the mechanic would be lacking. They’re also a minority of the designs, I feel. Like, Paranormal Analyst is literally the only card with the line “Whenever you manifest dread”...

These are two very clean designs that both have a place in Magic, I feel. The problem isn't that we need less PA's, the problem is dread shouldn't be a one set mechanic. I would love for them to connect different sets through a shared mechanic.

That seems really funny, and also a logistical nightmare. I already don’t have enough room for Magic cards XD

Having played a bit with the ring tempts you, I am actually a fan of the mechanic as is. If you want to make a personal version, I definitely wouldn’t make it more (or even as) complex as WotC’s implementation. The “when the ring tempts you, draw a card and lose life equal to the number of...

Surging Dementia was the real culprit. It looks so innocuous, until you have to discard your whole hand on turn two…

This is actually a neat way of retaining that strategic layer, while still allowing for duplicates :)

By realizing your goal is to create a fun and engaging draft format that can be drafted again and again. 100 Ornithopters might get you there, but 47 Lightning Bolts is just going to get people to draft the 12 Mountains + 28 Lightning Bolts Burn You Alive deck. Not all that rewarding. So aim for...

It’s really the ripple cards at common that ruined the draft experience, iirc.

Just to remind people, void doesn’t trigger on lands leaving the battlefield. So Insatiable Skittermaw only gets the +1/+1 counter when a nonland permanent has left the battlefield. No fetch shenanigans for us cube aficionados, unfortunately!

Oh yeah, they're hoping Marvel = ca$h in the bank! And they're probably right, to an extent. I can see this selling really well, and I don't know how to feel about that. I mean, Magic doing well means they will keep printing one of my main hobbies, but on the other hand, half of what they are...

Web-slinging is an alternate cost, it still abides by all the timing restrictions of the card it is on. You could conceivably have web-slinging on an instant, or a creature with flash, and then you’ld be able to web-sling at instant speed, but on everything else it doesn’t give you the ability...

I feel you! Superhero stuff really isn’t my cup of tea either. I think I can actually count the number of Marvelverse movies I watched on no hands, though I do still want to watch those two movies with the Raccoon, because they look like they have humor and I’m an eighties kid ;) That said, I...

Monstrous Emergence is fine, but not as reliable, and sorcery speed. Something like Elves (in Peasant) could use it if the opponent has must remove threats (Reanimator comes to mind, even if that isn’t exactly a tier one deck).

I’m curious if it will enable new decks to enter the meta because it’s literally the first option of its kind. There is Utopia Vow, but that’s clunky and quite bad.

It’s definitely a huge add for Pauper and Peasant if they don’t errata it.
