General Elegance in cube card selection

Excellent post! (and excellent chess set :)) I think these are sage words that every cube designer can gain something by at least keeping them in the back of your mind. I think Shadow is a perfect example of a neato mechanic that is just.... not needed, really at all. Another victim of that...

General Elegance in cube card selection

The way I look at it is, why does it have to be all that more interesting? I guess in this case I tread on the other side of that line, where I'd rather have drafters more at home in the format than individual cards that are interesting for interesting sake.

General Elegance in cube card selection

I think this point is exactly what I've been trying to do for the past little while, because a majority of my players are relatively new to the game, and very new to drafting. I think a good example of this decision making in action is something like: miscalculation v. counterspell...

Card/Deck Balance: Reasonably Efficient Non-Etb Creatures?

Fear not! I was perfectly fine where I was sitting a table over. Got about 2? games in while they quibbled over rules and such. I believe later I heard something like "mumble bumble Kicked mumble Rite of Rep mumble mumble Radiate". That one mist've been a real treat to deal with. Meanwhile I was...

You should totally just cover that part with a white paper piece or something

Card/Deck Balance: Reasonably Efficient Non-Etb Creatures?

This might not apply super heavily to cube, but I just witnessed (again) one reason that etb effects are annoying. Watching an EDH game, fairly developed, resolve a warp world. Took (taking? Not sure it's done yet) about as long as the rest of the game combined

    Sigh, a Cube

Eldritch Moon + Housekeeping ~ Part II Now that EMN has been fully spoiled and I've had more time to ponder stuff, ask probing questions, what have you, I think I've gotten more of my update ready to go! Focusing now on some cool fringe stuff that just has me giddy, and on the other colors that...

I have STE already, and I bet a lot of other people do too. The non-tech argument works against both VE and PD, so why even bring it up? I guess to say that neither version of the effect is needed? That's a valid argument

people have to see it as a blocker. We can all see it, but if your drafters don't then it doesn't play as intended. Have you guys actually read through the Gatherer? About half of people commenting realize it's probably meant for trading on defense. EDIT: This top post on Gatherer is basically...

In my mind it doesn't have to be an-in game upgrade in order to play better because it goes to decks that actually use it right. I've said it before I'm not super interested in trying either out, though I'm growing more tempted to test PD just to see if my reasoning is ok.

General Unpopular Fun/Effective Cards in Your Cube

mystic speculationsphinx of uthuun I've seen Spec on this thread before, but I'll mention it again. In any environment that tries to push control onto other colors, this is an excellent spell for toning down blues tools. It's repeatable card quality that can be used early if needed. I'm a big...

That's probably true. The problem is VE doesn't signal that super well. 0/3 signals that it blocks well, and thus can point that player into drafting the deck it's better in (lines). VE might actually work a little better, but it doesn't blatantly show that, some people assume you gotta attack...

Probably is there for Emerge. I'd posit that, like emmisary, people get too caught up in having to get the trigger at a specific time. I simply think that this is the same principle as VE, but sticks to a better game plan (defensive-based green). And I don't have a planned spot for her either...

General Elegance in cube card selection

perfect example of this concept. Clean burn spell with simple upside that adds a lot of incidental depth and interaction. Sweetness. Much like pillar of flame, but I'm such a fan of the 3 damage

Wasn't the problem with Viridian Emissary that it was basically awkward and didn't stick to a plan? Does this one at least stick to a plan (defense) better?

General What cards make you excited to draft Green and/or White decks?

it's a fine ramp card. Incentivizes using land-ramp to get to 7 asap, provides an early body for the weaker early game, and is a solid finisher. Of course requires adequate land ramp. It also doubles as a fine control win-con/card advantage body. and triples as a sweet midrange play to...

    General Fight Club

Yeah, and that's why I have Vault in now, but it's got more text for one effect than Charm does for three! Hearing that RBM has luck with charm makes me think that it's not much less useful... Vault: Helps with consistency for stuff like Living Death or other build-around strategies Opens up...

A couple cards that I'm specifically loving from our last-day dump: Wow. That's a super strong effect considering it's Instant One sided Gives the mythical ~Buff~ required to get green spells out of the dumpster Plenty of 2-1 or 2-2 potential here, and definitely a spell I'm willing to try...

So they did the full update. Some cool stuff. I am imprisoned by my mobile device right now, but there are definitely some tasty morsels among the last third of the set.
