    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

For a fair cube without cheap artifact mana and only a modicum of planeswalkers. Balance Can this be a fun card in an environment where it's harder to abuse the card?

General Emotional Spikes in Cube Design

I once reduced a competitive player to near tears in a cube game by going Wolfir Silverheart[c] into [c]Phyrexian Metamorph and bashing for 12. That was one emotional spike, across the table!

Yeah, noncreature, nonland sounds better for a spellseeker :)

Yeah, Victimize looks like a three mana spell, but it doesn't play like one.

    General Fight Club

Agree with both of the above posters. Languish and Crystal Shard seem like the obviously not broken choices, whereas both Toxic Deluge and Equilibrium are just a little bit too good at what they do. Equilibrium, as an enchantment, is harder too remove than Crystal Shard as well. If, however...

    Card/Deck Low Power Card Spotlight

Oh man, where to begin? The number of Riptiders that run multiple Brainstorms to give their spell velocity decks an impulse is telling. Time and again Brainstorm has proven to be the right tool for the job, and let's not forget it received some glowing recommendations from Jason. Sure, the card...

Notes From The Road: Japan Part 1

    That's poetry, not prose!

That is true, but those clues stick around for you to crack them on a later turn, unlike a Leap activation.

    General Fight Club

How many games have you lost because you missed a land drop on turn 3? Keeping up a single mana is a real cost in the early to mid turns, and you will simply not be able to deploy your threats as efficiently if you are forced to keep one land untapped all the time. Not to mention the times where...

    General Fight Club

Uh... I disagree. This all depends on the power level of your cube. Mysteries doesn't require you to hold up mana and makes creatures when you sac a clue, which isn't irrelevant. It's also a lot better against sweepers. I'm not saying it's more powerful than Evolutionary Leap, but to call it...

The flavor on Ever After still amazes me every time I see the card!

Onderzeeboot's Khans of Alara WUBGR Cube

So, this site is awesome! Lots of useful as-fan information. In Khans of Alara, each of the five wedge mechanics had an as-fan of just under 0.6. The as-fan of 4-power creatures (to support Temur's ferocious keyword) was 1.8, so three times as high. In Magic Origins the as-fan of the...

Onderzeeboot's Khans of Alara WUBGR Cube

Oh, for sure! That's why I only compared the as-fan of evergreen keywords so far. Block-specific keywords are next, so I can, for example, compare the as-fan of enchantments and enchantment matters cards in Magic Origins and Journey into Nyx!

Onderzeeboot's Khans of Alara WUBGR Cube

Pff... this is time-consuming work! I stopped at calculating the as-fan of my cube and two recent sets: Oath of the Gatewatch and Magic Origins, but already there are some obvious differences between my environment and retail draft. Origins had quite a bit of deathtouch, thanks to two...

Onderzeeboot's Khans of Alara WUBGR Cube

Like I mentioned in the elegance thread, I did an extensive count of keywords in my cube. It's fun looking at the low end and muse whether certain keywords are worth keeping in, but it's also worth looking at the top end. Ignoring flying, first strike, haste, and cycling (which is on a custom...

General Elegance in cube card selection

I don't know about the best creature in Modern, but yes, Wall of Omens is an excellent and elegant card! It's still not essential though, especially not in a cube that explicitly doesn't support {w/u} and {w/b} decks. Also, I'm not starting with defender, it's just high up the list because...

General Elegance in cube card selection

I agree that's the theory. I want to see what happens when I do reduce the number of underused keywords though. Because I use customs I can easily plug holes with keywords that are supported. Wall of Omens could be a 1/4 that investigates for example!

General Elegance in cube card selection

I did a not so quick count and arrived at 78. That's going to be less soon though as I am going to weed out cards with underused keywords that are not particularly important for the cube. Bonus points (towards removal) for keywords without reminder text, like the two defender (bye bye Wall of...

While I started playing in 1999 when Invasion was just out, Champions of Kamigawa was actually the first set I attended the prerelease for! I only missed a handful since :)
