Do you have an artifact theme? Would you cube at least 3 or 4 cards making them? If both are yes I'd say go for it. Oh, and I would recommend similar "tests" for the other tokens.

And even then, there being a better version shouldn't keep you from cubing a card that you love. If there is one format where an (theoretically) outclassed card can still shine, it is cube. Just make sure your cube is the right one! I mean, dude, I am cubing Jungle Lion.

Morningstar has always been in my cube. Heirloom Blade has the practical downside of looking at creature types. I do run quite a few cards that haven't all their creature types written and due to constant type updates I don't want to bother with it. Human, Phyrexian, Dinosaur ... they always do...

That one inparticular seems a little too weak. I don't think turning one of your saprolings into a bear with trample and vigilance is worth a card.

I think there is. Almost half of my removal is sorcery speed and in a world full of <3-colored decks, not everyone has artifact removal at hand. Thopter Shop, that's your chance.
