I don't actually think it's about this at all. Limited games play themselves more than any other format. Sure, there's variability in the form of ever changing decks, but I don't think this actually creates depth of gameplay. Depth of deckbuilding, sure. I think if anything depth increases...

Yeah, I've been thinking a lot lately about what makes Magic a good game, what's bad about it, and why people play it. I think the deckbuilding / deck choice, but many many matchups between Deck A and Deck B just have no depth to them. I think this is a pretty big flaw in the game's design.

Oh wait, it's standard. These games are abysmal to watch. About 1 relevant decision per game between both players.

For you newspaper fans, my analysis features quite centrally in this Guardian article: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/aug/02/ubuntu-edge-crowdfunding-prediction-miss

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm not really sure what you were saying. Were you being tautalogical? The rate at which a card is opened equates to the rate at which cards are in the packs?

Totally irrelevant, but I wrote a company blog post that just got put on the front page of Slashdot: http://news.slashdot.org/story/13/08/02/0139230/using-kickstarter-data-to-predict-ubuntu-edges-success

General Variance as a format(cube vs draft)

Maybe a dumb question, but as a statistician I have to know, how are we defining variance here? Variability in experience from draft to draft? Variability in deck power levels? Variability in car power level?

No, no sarcasm at all. Last year I found the cubing section pretty unwatchable, but the Modern constructed portion to be immensely entertaining.

    General The Idiosyncratic Component Obession

I just can't imagine who they would determine who would become the governing body for such a thing. I'm sure it's possible, but there would be some really dumb political positioning.

Standard Jund has to be my least favorite constructed archetype in a long time. Just a bunch of big dumb dudes with very little finesse.

You do have a point there. Smash also went through a ton of turmoil though. As an MLG employee I had access to the "Smash Back Room" forum where all the decisions were made, and witnessed years of arguments about what the stages should be, whether a character (Metaknight) should be banned, what...

    Card/Deck Lin Sivvi

I found the Rebels to be pretty repetitive in Modern, but really like the Birthing Pod decks in cube. The combination of a much higher density of removal coupled with the fact that Birthing Pod takes a creature away from the board makes for much more fluid game states. Rebels just kind of...
