Archfiend of Ifnir is weidly worded. 1. Why mention cycling when cycling is already discard? 2. Why mention another creature when it's not on the battlefield while being discarded (or cycled)? Perhaps it's a NWO (again) where new players need more help understanding cards.

Well What we want from morph is the cool mechanic, the element of surprise, the guessing game and the effect you can abuse if you get it a little too early. (You are allowed to get it too early because you already invested mana on previous turns) What we do not want: Efficient beaters...

Then maybe just give it extort and remove the vigilance. This way the investigate tokens will fuel the extort by drawing more gas. And the gas will damage will drain the opponent twice.

Agreed. When Wizards printed Newlamog I was like: "Yep, no God shuffling, they're going down!" Cause Wizards' explanation in Rise to their last ability (the shuffle) was that the Eldrazi was immortal and could never leave the game. They kind of gave it away when they printed the new ones...
