General Custom Cards: The Lab

Looking for ideas: Red 2 drop creatures

This probably isn't exactly what you're looking for, but I have played with this several times over the past couple years and the gameplay is just really good. It's the only member of this Mage cycle I haven't wanted to redesign at this point.

Coin Case {X}
Artifact
~ etbs with X charge counters.
{T}, remove a charge counter from ~: Create a treasure token.

Is this a good card? I mean, retail limited level good? It's for my Pokémagic cube and I'm not sure how powerful this is. I considered cycling 2 on it, but maybe there is something else I could add instead? Do I have to?

the important difference is that this is colorless and fixes in addition to ramping… idk what else you would do with it but in the specific instance of casting a 5 cost card on turn 3 it seems pretty good
until i thought of that scenario though, i was thinking “this does basically nothing”

It reminds me a lot of Pentad Prism, but with some synergy and much slower.
I don't think it would be overpowered? But what effect are you wanting this to have?

I've been trying to create a colorless treasure producer to help fixing for colorful decks. I thought using the coin case, an important item from Pokémon games would be a cool way and I have treasures in the cube anyway.

Maybe the whole X shtick is too much? Maybe it should just be a 3-mv mana rock that enters tapped and makes a treasure each turn?

So... it's basically a better Mana Bloom?

Yeah, kind of. Maybe I should actually copy mana blooms last ability.

How about this?

Coin Case {3}
Artifact
~ enters the battlefield tapped.
{T}: Create a treasure token. Then, if you control two or more treasures, sacrifice ~ and draw a card.

Here you can invest a coin again and again, but once you stack, you've hit the jackpot at rocket casino and you get your reward.

This is a terrific design (including the etb tapped clause)!

It's just as fast as Pentad Prism unless you need both counters on the turn you play it, which happens pretty rarely. inb4 proliferate, coretapper and Thalia.

I think the original card is reasonably powerful, but not in a way that can be taken advantage of in most cubes.

Do you guys think MPC will shut down Pokemon-MtG cards with credited anime art? What about fan art? I know Nintendo is a real crybaby about copyright stuff and I don't really understand any of it.

What about already-used MtG art?

I don't know if they'll print anything with the word "Pokémon" in it, but if you credit the studio (or the lead artist of the episode?) it might work. Fan art should be fine.

I decided to go ahead and e-mail their customer support so that I could be 100% clear on what my goals are and their reply already contradicts things I've seen them print, so that's not very reassuring.

I'll update as things clarify, I suppose, but they said they won't print things from MtG art despite @blacksmithy and @Velrun having cards with MtG art on them.

The difference being, I assume, is they just went ahead and sent it in without asking and the person handling the printing didn't give a rat's behind. Customer service on the other hand has to play nice with Copyright and all that because they are outward-facing and you could be some company for all they know.

Get a VPN, create a new e-mail, order the cards under your friend’s name and have them send the cards to your friend’s address and you’re golden looool

On a more serious note we didn’t create any cards Wizards was already selling. Everything we created was otherwise unoptainable. Unique products.

i’ve never had any problems printing any kind of art from any artist. i’ve printed an entire pokémon cube using the straight up pictures of real cards, plus lots of proxies of MTG cards using real MTG art. if they detect a copyright, step 1 in the process is contacting you and asking you to change the problematic image(s), so even if there is a problem it’s solvable.

Yeah, but that doesn't change the fact that you don't own the copyright for the images.

In the e-mail they said they couldn't print anything Pokemon.

This seems most likely by far. All of the e-mails had an auto generated text about how seriously they take copyright at the start of them. It's probably just for show.

Hopefully they don't send back my entire Pokemon cube after it's done (in 2025 at this rate), but I guess I could simply re-send it and hope a different employee gives it the green light. They probably want my $100 or whatever.
