Sets [FIN] [UB] Final Fantasy

I don't know how I feel about Saga creatures in general, but this is quite the dream to live.

This card is sweet. Cool way to branch artifact and reanimator archetypes through Grixis colors and being able to Surveil off any artifact gives it a lot of potential. Raise Dead at the end of each of your turns gives you grindy potential in the late game ala Meren of Clan Nel-Toth and while I don't think you'll be reaching the 8 artifact ability without a Retrofitter Foundry, it's a cool payoff for your drafters that might go all in on artifacts.

I like the design of ability 1 here - it probably won't come up in a cube basically ever, since you'd need instant-speed proliferation, but the set itself has some stuff that messes with specifically lore counters, even if no instants yet, so I bet there'll be one (can't reprint Storyweave, but the effect has been done before!)
What won't come up? You can cast it the turn you play it and for two turns afterwards, proliferating just gives you less time.
I think the card is really cool, but it seems a bit on the weak side. I will play it though since red etb creatures and cards that make you to play differently are both in high demand, and giving things haste is fun.

I mean, so are Sacred White Deer, Redtooth Vanguard, Brown Ouphe, and Silverback Elder. Colors in cardnames don’t dictate the color of the card.

lol :)

Redtooth is referring to the color of the teeth and not the color of the creature’s skin. Doesn’t follow the same logic gave to Seeker.

Brown is not a color in Magic. Doesn’t follow the same logic I gave to Seeker.

Silverback does not refer to a color but is a name of a type of ape. Doesn’t follow the same logic I have to Seeker.

The one that follows the same logic is the white deer. Which is also kind of odd. Now we have more oddities.

The alt-art on this is incredible. I'm going to have to revisit potential U/B artifacts synergies in my next update to figure out the best way to include it.

I love Cube because I can see a mechanic or a piece of art I'm obsessed with and can say "my Cube is about this now" and make it actually work. What an incredible format.

edit: also, we finally got a mono-colored Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain/stronger Reki, the History of Kamigawa in the perfect color for it. The additive distraction of the DFC is not ideal but I am really happy to get this upside, especially when it's got the horrendous and unnecessary "only once each turn" line. It's a lock for me.

Does this backside really not have flying?
It really doesn't! Real Crovax, Ascendent Hero situation.

here is the secret: Contraband Kingpin (it is much less good, but that fourth point of toughness is SO high that it and Golbez can be "survives removal" buddies!)

Honestly, the Saga text is an additive distraction on this, I really like it as just a rummager! She'll do fun stuff in retail draft, I'm sure, but I'm all about that first ability in Cubes.
edit: I have been informed that Urza's Saga is a Saga, a Land, and has MV 0. So uh. She can do that too. Not actually unfair in any Cube where Urza's Saga is! Just, you know, she can do that.

oh also they changed the rules on Sagas:
https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/final-fantasy-release-notes said:
Starting with the release of Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY, we're updating the rules: If a Saga has no chapter abilities, it won't be subject to the state-based action that would cause it to be sacrificed due to how many lore counters it has. Similarly, it won't be subject to the turn-based action that adds a lore counter to each Saga you control at the beginning of your first main phase each turn. For example, if your Summon: Bahamut with one lore counter on it loses all abilities because someone attaches Observed Stasis to it, it'll won't gain lore counters via the turn-based action until it has chapter abilities again (probably because you removed the Observed Stasis somehow.)
Probably not super-relevant for your cube, but the new dream to live is Urza's Saga, let it tick up once to Chapter II, then play Blood Moon - Moon makes it a Mountain, so it stops accumulating counters, but Saga's chapter 2 trigger gives the land an ability on layer 6, applied after Moon, so you have a Mountain that can make a Construct.

...every turn
