I just want to invent a ro-sham-bo style of Magic
[17:46:30] Jason Waddell: or, yomi perhaps?
[17:46:40] Jason Waddell: some like, no deckbuilding required
[17:46:51] Jason Waddell: fixed thing, pick up and play, Magic mindgames
[17:48:23] ma48rtin: so... like constructed?
[17:48:53] Jason Waddell: yeah, but like, more universal, like, a bar-game version of Magic
[17:49:22] Jason Waddell: you and a buddy just take a stack and start psyching each other out
[17:49:41] ma48rtin: but it still has to be magic?^^
[17:49:43] snorful: isn't that what the battle box kinda was?
[17:49:52] Jason Waddell: maybe something highly disruptive where you start at 5 life
[17:49:59] ma48rtin: :O
[17:50:08] Jason Waddell: I was thinking a format made of 5-10 cards
[17:50:18] ma48rtin: just give everyone a form of the dragon emblem
[17:51:31] Jason Waddell: this is interesting
[17:51:42] Jason Waddell: what if your life total resets at the end of each turn
[17:51:50] Jason Waddell: and you have to set up a lethal blow
[17:52:06] Jason Waddell: like "do I go for the bolt?" and then they misstep you
[17:52:07] ma48rtin: got you to 0,5 NOT GOOD ENOUGH!
[17:53:05] Jason Waddell: exactly
[17:53:31] snorful: life as payment gets interesting
[17:53:32] ma48rtin: might actually be fun
[17:53:41] ma48rtin: probe probe, gg
[17:53:45] snorful: :p
[17:54:11] Jason Waddell: vapor snag
[17:54:29] Jason Waddell: meddling mage
[17:55:10] Jason Waddell: ratchet bomb
[17:55:49] Jason Waddell: empty the warrens
[17:55:54] Jason Waddell: I don't know
[17:56:44] snorful: same decks all day every day?
[17:57:00] Jason Waddell: yeah, something like that
[17:57:18] Jason Waddell: maybe just a stack with multiple copies of each
[17:57:25] snorful: 7 cards, something on board, see if you can take out your opp in two turns
[17:57:28] Jason Waddell: I want cards with play to them, and for it to feel like a "duel"
[17:57:37] snorful: that's more of a solitaire game though
[17:57:44] Jason Waddell: yeah, no turn limit
[17:58:31] ma48rtin: well everyone will want counterspells then... might not be too much about the actual creatures? burn is definately evil if every1 is at 5 life
[17:58:52] Jason Waddell: depends on if the burn is just shock
[17:58:58] ma48rtin: true
[17:58:58] snorful: just thought of those challenges in dotp, and if there was a way to move a puzzle like that to a two player enviroment
[17:59:11] Jason Waddell: yeah, I don't want a puzzle
[17:59:23] Jason Waddell: I want mind-games, but I don't know which cards enable that
[17:59:32] Jason Waddell: like, a format where you can trick the opponent
[18:00:18] snorful: poker
[18:00:47] Jason Waddell: hmmmm
[18:01:56] snorful: but do you want to keep all the magic stuff? like playing lands, etc etc etc, stuff like that takes away a bit from the quick setup and play
[18:02:33] Jason Waddell: I think maybe you just get lands for free?
[18:02:43] Jason Waddell: or start with 5 or something?
[18:03:03] Jason Waddell: they wouldn't be in the deck you draw from
[18:03:08] snorful: I think start with 5 sounds like a good idea, was along what I was thinking
[18:03:27] Jason Waddell: yeah, but then going first probably counts for too much
[18:03:42] Jason Waddell: somebody make a thread
[18:03:44] Jason Waddell: I have to go home
[18:03:56] snorful: you can do it that battle box way, and choose which of your five lands you play every turn
[18:04:11] Jason Waddell: yeah
[18:04:16] ma48rtin: pact like cards would be pretty awesome
[18:04:34] snorful: and have them be utopia lands, if that makes sense, or duals if that makes more sense

So a summary of the proposed format in case you TLDR'd that block of text, I think it's like: both players each get an identical stack of cards, both players start at a low level of health points and reset their lives at the end of each turn, each player have access to a separate pile of lands and play one each turn like in a battle box, the focus is on tricky lines of play and "mind games" (according to wadell).

Possible land mechanic: every turn you can put a basic into play tapped. Reveal your hand: untapped instead this turn.

Our group plays "Danish" i think it is called.
You take a random pile of magic cards and make it a library for both players.
Both players draw 3 cards.
EDIT: Also in your draw step you don't draw a card.
The rule goes that you have infinite mana in your pool all the time.
So basically you play your cards and see who wins. Winner takes the piles of 6 cards or more if there were card draw.
When the library is empty you count who won more games or how many cards you won, what ever.
Last time i played it i had some big plays like: Firehoof Cavalry, Molting Snakeskin, Rakshasa Deathdealer ;)

I wonder how you actually design mind games into Magic. They come naturally to something like Netrunner, but Magic doesn't have a lot of inherent room for trickery.

Does anybody have examples of dynamics / situations we could seek to recreate?
