General Riptide's P1P1 Thread

@henkdetenk I would take Fiery Temper from that pack. Old school cubes often have few etb effects and removal is stronger there. I also love madness beyond reason, so I can't help myself anyway. If it wasn't Fiery Temper, I'd pick Disintegrate, Jilt or Deep Analysis, so this pack would lead me down an blue or red path either way.

@gaytransmulldrifter Here I would probably also take FTk over Opposition, because I wouldn't be sure, if I could make really that many tokens in an old school cube, so the kavu might just be better. But I agree with Mondschwein, these two seem like the power outliers here. Beyond that, not so sure, but I think Overgrowth is an underrated card.

Well, I might post a pack as well.

Lots of black in that pack so I'm not picking any of these as it would be very likely to not see a lot of black cards in pack 2, although I like shredder and order a lot and even the knight feels good to pick for me.

Loch Dragon is very color intense but it looks like it could be a good enabler for UR madness or draw/discard matters. Also a respectable evasive body.

Invoke the winds is very good but makes even splashing a bit hard. A pass for me.

Machete is good for aggro and colorless, cat collector looks at least interesting and krushok is just a great card overall. Since there is only one more green card in that pack I'm going with the flexible krushok but machete is quite close behind.

I did not want to state that order is on par with shredder for me, I just like them both. This is a thread about p1p1 so I should have made it more clear lol
Just wanted to say that I like the black cards in that pack. I see the flaw in my logic about not getting any black cards, but I like krushok a lot and I like to cut green out of my neighbor's picks early.

All this talk about the black in the pack got me curious: Why didn't you mention Do or Die? I've firstpicked this card before, it has the highest ceiling from all cards in the pack (except maybe Disintegrate for lethal) and unlike other edicts doesn't even become useless in the face of tokens. In an environment where most players will have 3+ creatures on the board the vast majority of the time, the downside of doing nothing against a single creature seems negligible.

I've always wondered why I never ever see it in other players lists. It's literally half a Plague Wind, rounded down.

Haha, don't worry! I was joking, not referering specially about your post!

It's not a bad card, but it does have two big limits: You divide the pile and it rounds down. In practice, it's removal that does nothing against one creature and Diabolic Edict against two and three. It's only when you face four creatures that it becomes a cheaper Barter in Blood. So it's a fairly narrow card and you need a deck that will support it.

On the other hand, I'm almost assured to play Bone Shredder. First, it's good removal. Second, it opens the door to synergy builds. It excells with sacrifice, blink and small reanimation. It can carry equipment if needed and even works with Order of Midnight.

That and players dislike giving other people choices.

As for the pack: Can't go wrong with good old Disintegrate. It slices, it dices, it exiles, it finishes games.

New pack? New pack.

I think the right pick here would be either Chainer's or the Bishop, as generally useful sources of card advantage. But chances are I would take Wild Mongrel because he's just such a good boy

That's not quite true in two ways.

1. It's better than straight up edict already when they are on three creatures as they either sac the creature you want to see dead the most OR they are saccing two creatures already.

2. It's much better than Barter in Blood against four as you don't sacrifice anything yourself.

It's so much better than Cruel Edict, like a lot better really.

That's a tight one @henkdetenk
I have a soft spot for the broker and also like sandblast and mulch but for me it's bishop or arcane sanctum. I like value through attacking on a nice body, costing 5 makes the card very reasonable for lower powered lists since you also need something in your gy to be good. Mulch looks like a good card for those threshold decks, and just from the pack itself I can tell that getting some lands is also very good.

Okay my pick would be the sanctum, 3c fixing lands are good enough for 2c without splash but make splashing a lot easier. If bishop, broker, sandblast, edict or arch of orazca will come back to me I'd happily pick one of those up after that 1st pick.
