Sets [THB] Theros Beyond Death *SPOILER*

haktos.jpg

This looks neat. It's probably not coming down on curve with that mana cost, but it's a great late-game threat, I think. It's also easy to miss that it's a great blocker for one turn.

There's a new phoenix and it's dope as hell. 1RR 2/2 flaste with escape 2rr 3 cards, and it escapes as a 3/3 flaste! I think having a red section with a bunch of phoenixes is finally viable.

The First Iroan Games {2}{G}
(As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter. Sacrifice after IV.)
I — Create a 1/1 white Human Soldier token.
II — Put three +1/+1 counters on target creature you control.
III — If you control a creature with power 4 or greater, draw two cards.
IV — Create a Gold token.

This is a card! You can play this on turn 2 off of a Llanowar Elves, make a 4/4 that can immediately attack on turn three, and draw cards! There's even some cute flavor text about gold tokens! Actually, that line is more important than you might think, because it allows the games to stick around an extra turn to get blinked by a Flickerwisp or friend. This card is great- add it to your cube and never let it go!

Original Theros block had Gold tokens, a few years before Ixalan introduced Treasures. It would arguably be weirder to also have Treasures in a Theros set.

I just wait for Theros to be fully spoilered, then I'm going to redesign my cube. Lots of spoilers look very good to me, I love sagas and I think I'm going to add lots of enchantments to my cube (I just don't like most artifacts; if they're strong, they're picks too easy).

I'm really excited right now. :)

Is there a functional difference or reason to have both?

I'm just baffled to have both "gold" and "treasures" if they are both identical gameplay-wise, specially when Ixalan was just two sets ago!

Improvise is the one difference where it comes up:

And why they made the move to treasure over gold. But hey, flavor.
You win a gold medal!

I remember they wanted the token to tap and sacrifice instead of just sacrifice. Gold token had a flaw according to Wizards. So they made Treasure tokens. However now they are back on Theros and kind of have to go back to Gold tokens for this one set since original Theros had Gold tokens.

Note the "after you're done activating abilities" in the reminder text. The change doesn't make the interaction with Improvise work differently, it just makes it more clear.

With Treasure tokens your tokens can improvise and help pay for one mana. Then they are done.

With Gold tokens your tokens can improvise and help pay for one mana. Then they can also be sacrificed to add one mana that you can spend on casting a second spell.

Is this a stonk? It's kind of like a Blaze that can also just be used for creature/planeswalker removal.

We're (finally) starting to see some more Constellation cards! This guy is not very good- he's too slow for what he does and his body does not make up for his cost. Unfortunately, this card's cubability has been ruined by retail-limited needing to not have something broken.

That said, this does make me hopeful that we might get some good constellation guys in blue. It's certainly possible!

Removal is almost always the primary mode of fireballs. Usually you only point to the player when it's a KO or directly leading to a KO. This you could add to an attacking board, maybe benefit from some combat buff, etcetera. Really nice red X spell.

Purphoros's Intervention is seriously pushed. 1R = 2 damage, 2R = 4 damage, 3R = 6 damage. I don't think we're seen the last rate in a burn spell in the past. The flexibility is great and something that is consistently undervalued when looking at new cards. I actually don't intend to run it because of how flexible it is - basically you can't go wrong with using it at any point. Plus, it's so inelegant.

Glad to see constellation making a comeback and the flash theme.

There is a limit to how much flexibility is healthy for a given format, but in principle flexibility is good! Honestly, I think I will at least need to test it out, given that I even run an elemental theme in Temur colors.

Haven't been here for a while, so thanks for leaving me this one. Seems really sweet for me and might even be too good, as I can easily see this quickly becoming a 2/5+ while having a significantly impactful activated ability.

Overall, the devotion stuff is exciting for The Black Cube and the enchantment stuff is exciting for my -1 cube idea. Cool set for me so far.

This is another first with a new wording. It simply mentions ability. Not activated or triggered but just ability.

First Titan from Theros. The five mono-colored Gods banished these to take control of Theros but now they seem to be back.

It has ‘evoke: do nothing’ :p
