Sets The Hobbit

There's been 45 non-UB blue cards that say vigilance since 40K's release. 15 are common.
There's been 37 UB blue cards that say vigilance since 40K's release. 8 are common.

There's valid reasons to dislike UB, but this one statistically doesn't hold up.

Similarly, there's two non-UB bears with reach and only one UB bear with reach.
Before UB we had very very few mono blue vigilance. Now we are swimming in them. For lore reasons because some characters are vigilant in their universe.

The deviation away from Magic should be the main talking point. And people should laugh every time they see a Bilbo Baggins being spoiled. Be part of the solution.

Please don’t gang up on me again. Please don’t be sarcastic. Please don’t call me stupid. Help Magic instead <3

Vigilance is currently secondary in blue, and has been since at least 2021 based on this article by Mark Rosewater:

Vigilance
Primary: White
Secondary: Blue and green

White tends to get this on creatures where the power is equal to or less than the toughness, and seldom with a power greater than 3. Green tends to get this ability on larger creatures to differentiate it from white. We've recently decided to also make blue secondary in vigilance because we were looking for more creature abilities to use in blue. We're still feeling out what kind of blue creatures will get vigilance.

The article linked above is updated from this one written in 2017. Back then vigilance was secondary only in green. "Untaps itself" was primary in blue. I'm sure I've heard Mark Rosewater say that Vigilance was given to blue because it is often functionally close enough to an untap ability and is cleaner.

Untaps itself

Primary: blue
Secondary: white

This is a creature that has an activated ability (or sometimes a triggered ability) that untaps itself. It's mostly used in blue, but occasionally in white when we want to simulate vigilance because actual vigilance is problematic due to timing.

Apart from a couple of cards from before the keyword existed, vigilance first appeared as a blue ability in Dissension on two cards which also had white mana pips in their text boxes. It was on four cards in Planar Chaos, implying that it was a colour pie bend at that time. There was then a 15 year gap until the next blue vigilance card in 2022: Vhal, Candlekeep Researcher appeared in June that year, Haunting Figment was released in September.

This means that 81 out of 92 blue vigilance cards have appeared during the UB era. 36 of these 81 are from UB sets. My view is that the move to vigilance in blue was not caused by Universes Beyond, based on the timing of the articles by Mark Rosewater, but does coincide with it, resulting in a high proportion of UB cards with the ability.

I dislike many of the UB sets, particularly those based in the world in which I live (Marvel, Turtles) but I don't mind the fantasy ones so much (D&D, Avatar, parts of Final Fantasy). I even prefer some UB to the in-universe sets that I felt were intended to "soften us up" for settings that are not typical fantasy (1930s Capenna, wacky races Aetherdrift, 1980s horror Duskmourn). On the other hand I liked cyberpunk Kamigawa and didn't mind science fantasy Edge of Eternities because I am wildly inconsistent.

But if the constant release schedule and aesthetic whiplash are getting you down, why not take a break and draft my premodern desert cube: 100% old frame goodness guaranteed.

That makes sense. So now I’ll just wait for that apology from Ravnic calling me stupid.
Let's make an agreement: you explain to me what part of Hobbit lore is responsible for large bear having reach, and then I will explain to you my "stupid" statement. If you still then think it's an insult, you will get an official apology.
