I've been basing it off either "would this win if you slammed the two creatures together like a kid playing with action figures?" or "would playing this remove the other creature from consideration?"

In other words, you could "play" an X/1 in response to Blister Beetle, even though the ETB would normally get rid of it.

Btw, I think this thread would be much more interesting if the creatures had to actually kill the other in combat.
