General Print this Wizards! (So I can put it in my cube)

Small problem.
This card:
works fine mechanically, but monstrosity doesn't really make sense on a creature so small before and after.
So I thought to change it, but this card:
Is an actual garbage fire. 1/1s don't contribute meaningfully to a board state on their own, and instead of advancing your board and getting a spell back, you're sacrificing this instead, all for the promise of looping volt charge once you have 8 mana and this has another toughness somehow.
Should I just go back? Buff the adorable turtle birds somehow? Something else entirely?

I would just go back and play what works mechanically. The small flavor disconnect isn't worth shooting yourself in the foot over.
