Sets (TDM) Tarkir: Dragonstorm Previews!

See, that's where I'm at and I need people to take sense into me. I've got artifacts as a major theme, and using this, then 0 for either a rock or a trinket artifact to immediately exile your opponents best stuff seems great. Needs to be built in the right deck, but I like encouraging build-arounds over generic good stuff anyway.

Would come down to how fast your cube is in general. If it's slower and 7 mana is non-trivial then this might end up being the generic good stuff issue you were trying to avoid as it's just a value engine if it gets to stick. You get way more out of it in a deck with more ways to trigger the exile, but I'd probably just play this in a G/x ramp deck straight up. If it sticks around it's going to stabilize any game really hard in a grindy or midrange match-up.

I like to think it's on the faster end. Aggro is well supported with good density, land is very good but'll hurt you. Got a good chunk of the non-power cards names mox in there too. I'm going to give it a shot, my cube isn't the 5c goodstuff go-over-the-top type so it should be good but not broken.

I kinda like the cycle of enchantments that get bounced to your hand whenever you play a Dragon.

Also, look at these bad girls:

That's one of the strongest edicts I've seen in a while, and apparently mana dorks are something red can do now.

These are super interesting glue. I like the bodies they chose for each for limited (kinda wish the mardu one was a 1/1 flier but alas) and these are encouraging to see, I know some people were worried this set would end up like New Capenna: 3 color themeing but 2 color decks because of a lack of support. This sends a good signal to that not being the case.

Love this little goober

Strategic%2BBetrayal%2B%253Cpromo%2Bpack%253E%2B%255BTDM%255D.jpg

I like my graveyard hate worse than this and my killspells better than this, but this is still interesting, especially if you're not on game objects tribal like I am.

Much like Witchstalker Frenzy this counts either players attackers, which won't really mean you put it in a deck with no creatures banking on your opponent to do the work for you, but more in that it has extra play in the aggro mirror, which is nice.

Train described this as "The most casual commander playtest without life totals card I've ever seen" and I'm inclined to agree

Mana Dorks are in red's color pie now, and they've explicitly stated that red is going to get worse ones than green does
Neat direction, with Llanowar Elves being reprinted in foundation WotC seems to believe in the 1 mana dork again so keeping red at 2+ seems safe. Looking at this card specifically it seems neat, we always love mana dorks having some late game play to them and a plummet is a nice place to be, honestly, I'm surprised a dork got this specific upside in red before it happened in green? (might be wrong)

Perfect add for that Brightglass Gearhulk I told you all to add to your cubes last set. The numbers on this are interesting, 5 mana is a reachable but extremely inconvienient number, so this is undoubtably good and will still not work some amount of the time, which is probably perfect for a removal spell.

If you are more worried about abilities than the creature blocking, Unable to Scream is another excellent option from DSK you could run instead, and as cute as it is, I would only recommend Witness Protection for the sprezzatura bonus, as a 1/1 is much better than a 0/2.

So last gasp is a totally cromulent removal spell, and after hearing Safra talk about Power Word Kill and making all your big creatures have the same few cool types (which also means PWK has the nice upside of being able to kill almost anything except the stuff you deem really important.) I could absolutely see a world where I add this on the assumption it'll mostly just be last gasp, and sometimes you get to ball out and it's lightning bolt

Taigam-Master-Opportunist-TDM-265.jpg

This card's cool as shit I don't care that I have to deal with suspend again, more second spell cards is something I'm in for

Someone here will absolutely care that Unable to Scream makes the creature into an artifact while Witness Protection doesn't, or maybe that the Legitimate Businessperson becomes green and white while the Toy keeps its colors. That person is not me but I'm still mentioning it. So many tiny differences that probably don't matter compared to the point of power!

2brid's back baby awoooooooo

the least stylish mana symbols in the game. the templating equivalent of cargo pants with zip-off legs

does renew my appreciation for how hard Morph was working in the original KTK to make a 3-color draft set playable.

A flawless card for my multicolor Peasant cube. Hopefully there'll be a sufficient density of Omens for me to include, because I already run a lot of Adventures, and I think I'll need at least 3 or 4 Omens to make the distinction clear. I can see these getting misplayed a lot if they're run alongside Adventures.

I'd love it if they included some "whenever you shuffle" triggers in this set.

Is that something you want players to maximize?

I suppose it could be a problem if a player went really deep on shuffle effects, but it seems like something people are doing pretty often anyway. My Peasant cube runs the MH3 landscapes, a cycle of basic landcycling spells, and a cycle of typed landcycling spells already. Plus Terramorphic Expanse and the like. Throw in these Omens and there's a lot of shuffling to be had.

I'm a simple game designer: I see a game action and I want a payoff!

Besides, fetchlands could use a bump, lol.

Luckily Rakshasha's Bargain is an undeniably stylish card, regardless of one's feelings on twobrid mana. I hope they're able to make the whole cycle this cool!
au contraire, i do not wish to disregard my feelings, so i therefore do indeed deny this card's stylishness.

moreover i reject your unserious attempt to make stylishness objective, thou rationalist sisyphus ;)

if you insist that mana cost aesthetics shouldn't count against a card's style, then we're left to conclude that open fire is no less cool than lightning bolt (Lightning Bolt costs twobrid 2/0, after all!) and that's just silly. twobrid sucks and can absolutely spoil an otherwise cool design.

These appear to be two cycles even, one at common and one at uncommon. I personally don't mind twobrid, but I do prefer traditional hybrid cards.

I mean, I most likely have to try this, as there are limited options in white prowess cards, but ... it seems really tough to make this work, right? You would want to trigger it three times to be really happy even at lower power levels, right? Or are three prowess monks good enough on turn five? I wish it would make a monk on etb.

While I appreciate the passionate defense of your feelings, I must firmly stand by my assessment of stylishness. You see, declaring a card uncool based solely on its two-brid mana cost feels like a soggy baguette at a French café—completely out of place! And let’s not kid ourselves; dismissing twobrid as an evil villain in the saga of card design feels rather theatrical, no? After all, is it not the meaning of the mana symbols that contribute most to a card's style? Open Fire may look cool on paper, but let’s be honest, it can’t quite match Lightning Bolt’s zap-tastic flair! Besides, who wouldn’t want to cast a spell with a flair that screams "I am the storm!" rather than "I am just a campfire?" So, no need to bring out the pitchforks—let's embrace the wildly subjective nature of stylishness with a wink and a grin!

To trigger it three times would mean to create one, then two, then three prowess dudes. A total of six tokens.

Yeah I agree that it takes a lot of work. I would prefer having something like this in a cube over Assemble the Legion but I don’t think I can run either.

I mean, Smirking Spelljacker is technically not obsoleted here, but I'd sure rather pay an extra U to get the spell now rather than when I attack, even if 6 is way more than 5...

(but eat it, Draining Whelk, old friend)

I love Smirking Spelljacker but this is a REALLY COOL DRAGON (with much better art) and it also costs UU, making it harder to just throw it into any deck.

As I'm looking to de-power my Cube, these kinds of changes are looking more appealing.
