    General Color matters / devotion

The statement that "Anybody can learn the numbers. That does not require skill." is patently absurd. Skills are learned abilities. If you know them better than your opponent or are better at applying them than your opponent, you will win more games then them. That means you have greater...

    General Color matters / devotion

Hilariously enough, there are some people who believe that white has no advantage/black has an advantage in chess and the white advantage is due to lack of skill or "mass psychosis". With any abstract strategy game, by definition ideal play can only lead to one possible outcome (first player...

General How do YOU plan to use the various Conspiracy cards?

The thing with the conspiracies are that their only cost is a draft pick. They don't occupy any deckspace, so if you draft it, it improves your deck and for the most part these aren't weak effects. For someone like me who has inflated the amount of draft space tremendously, the opportunity...

    General Color matters / devotion

ahadabans: I'm absolutely not saying Magic should try to be Imperial. Different games do different things, that's what makes them different. While I would say Magic isn't the best designed game, it more then makes up for its faults by having an off the charts "See What Happens Next!" quality to...

    General Color matters / devotion

I don't think the strength of poker is its game design. Rather, I think the simplistic design combined with the monetary stakes creates an epic environment to enjoy the "metagame" parts of gaming. Which, in itself, is great game design in its own way I suppose, though in a completely...

    General Color matters / devotion

I find that as a general rule, random elements are a weakness in games and as such exploring how to best layer that randomness is a design-wise dead end: game design should be seeking to minimize random elements. Still, I enjoy plenty of games with “luck” and I think games should use...

    Innistrad Themed Cube: 360 Unpowered

There is a lot to read here and respond to and I don't have time right not, but I will add something. I have run Nantuko Husk and it is pretty decent. I mean, its not as good as it was in the old rules (where he was easily one of my top 5 favorite creatures at the time), but its solid enough...

    General Color matters / devotion

"Luck" as can be usefully discussed in games comes from a three major flavors Mechanically installed randomness: The game rules create events that happen beyond the players' control. Hidden information: Players make decisions without complete information. Multiplayer Chaos: The decisions of...

General The Great Custom Cards in Cube Debate Thread of Doom

I'm not going to actually "debate" custom cards, as I really don't care I'm going to run them either way and I don't care if you do or don't, but I will give my experiences with running them which may be of some value to someone in this thread. At first, people look at me funny. They might...

    FlowerSunRain's Cube

Also, Zur seems pretty damn amazing. I now am running one 3 color card, so maybe I could make it 2, he's pretty spot on, though its red that really needs to connect to the enchantment theme.

    FlowerSunRain's Cube

Something like this won a draft in December (NOT EXACT BY ANY MEANS OR AN IDEAL BUILD, but you can probably get the general idea. It probably had one more 1 drop somehow) Ones 1 Judge's Familiar 1 Emerge Unscathed 1 Drifter il-Dal 1 Favored Hoplite 1 Silent Departure 1 Force Spike 1 Curiosity...

Sets Return to Ravnica Block Retrospective

Madcap Skills is also probably my favorite card from the block. Cartel Aristocrat is my favorite card that I don't run because its gold. After reading Dom's list I will revise my statement. Ravnica block was awesome in spite of not being inspiring.

Sets Return to Ravnica Block Retrospective

Ravnica block was ok, but not very inspiring. Hybrid mana is great and getting a few more cards that use the mechanic was nice. Extort is a great mechanic, but the cards just aren't pushed hard enough (and not individually interesting enough to use multiples) to make it into a draftable...

Sets What cards from Theros are you playing?

I'm with you 100%, man, Theros block has been phenomenal.

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

What he really needs is "Time is Money" from the WoW card game, which is basically haste just for activated abilities. If that didn't push hard enough, flash would be pretty awesome.

Its a fair, enchantment's matter friendly version of sinkhole. If anyone should run it, its me, and yet I don't and play the obnoxious sinkhole instead. Possibly designer error, but I remember Blight sucking back in the day as sinkhole 5-8.

    Card/Deck Building/drafting around Tarmogoyf

The thing is, even when you aren't pushing him, a 3/4 for 2 is more then solid and he usually hits that quickly on curve and topdecks bigger then that. I realize you can build around him to make it better, but tarmogoyf doesn't seem to be in need of being better.

    Diakonov's Cube (450)

While I was skeptical about it at first, copious access to mana fixing makes better games, makes fewer nongames and leads to more interesting deckbuilding. Giving incentives for fewer colors through things like devotion, synergy based design and awesome colorless lands is much more satisfying...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Do you want non-white decks having this effect? How much is protection from artifacts worth in your cube? How much is protecting artifacts worth? Faith's Shield protects anything, costs {W} and has a crazy strong emergency mode. Do you want to be able to counter a vindicate on a planeswalker...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I ran him for a second. He's monstorously slow, but he hits a lot of awesome utility and has trample. Not being able to eat something the same turn seems like its too much of a liability, but you never know. He might come back in, currently phantom nantuko is in that slot and not doing much...
