    Oh sure; I mean it's probably better to go '3 +1/+1 counters on this dude or thing' rather than '5 to the face or thing', as either 5 to the face or thing is worse, but three +1/+1 counters is a threat for the rest of the game.

    I think there's a reason the style guides and art descriptions are so constraining these days, and it's to avoid things like that. Of course, we also avoid some of the sweeter art magic used to get, but that is apparently acceptable loses compared to "wrong" art. Mediocrity for life, yo?
