Can't speak for Soul Snare, but Porphyry Nodes is tons of fun IMO. I had it in a previous non-synergistic cube (back in my MTGS days). Just have to keep in mind it's almost exclusively a control deck tool. If you end up really liking it, you should check out Drop of Honey too (the original version!)

Really depends in what way the spells matter. In my cube, for instance, I play Pyromancer's Goggles as a means of supporting spells matter, so I prefer Prophetic Bolt for my slot. I could also see Jori En, Ruin Diver being a lot like Mercurial Geists but perhaps more interesting and less poisonous.
