    General The Fixing and I

completely agree with the free mulligan rule and reducing pressure in an environment. i don’t agree that all 4-5 color decks are samey though. just as a concrete example, in our cube night, my deck was Sultai Artifacts/Magecraft running Hangarback Walker, Walking Ballista, Emry, and Trinket...

    Sets (MH2) Modern Horizons 2 Testing/Includes Thread

i considered running it in my environment with about 13 buddies out of 100ish creatures, but yeah i think you probably want about double that. EDIT: the art is amazing though

    General The Fixing and I

in the interest of complete fairness, i will say, while 2/3 of my drafters were fine with my busted custom mana base, one of them did balk a bit when he realized the fetches didn’t even cost life to activate. but games didn’t seem to go long or adversely favor reactive decks so… shrug!

yeah that’s the reference. i personally find the fetch/dual manabase to be the most pleasing one in existence in terms of gameplay, but you are correct that other methods of manabase architecture can reduce flood/screw in significant ways using different means. but IMO almost any “comes into...

    General The Fixing and I

i should have been more clear in my original post: from a DECKBUILDING perspective you just want to have as many fetchable lands or a few more in your deck as you have fetches. from a CUBEBUILDING standpoint you probably want to have at least as many fetchable nonbasics in the cube as you have...

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

i think in most cases it’s a net positive to include better-than-ABUR manabases in your cube tbh EDIT: regardless of the power level of your non land cards

Or, “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Five-Color Goodstuff Piles.” In a game of Magic, there are many ways to lose the game. You can of course scoop. You can get beat down by a more proactive deck. You can get out-attritioned by a more reactive deck. You can fail to disrupt/beat down...

    Sets (MH2) Modern Horizons 2 Testing/Includes Thread

yeah the direct comparison to Solemn Recruit, which is not really a viable high power creature, is pretty telling.

FWIW my grixis player splashed white for Prismatic Ending, but it was never cast

    Attack on Cube (2021 Update)

players were fine with the draft format overall but expressed a general feeling that the resulting pools were SLIGHTLY too big. for next time, we will be keeping the cube the same size, but drafting 6x9 instead of 7x8, which leaves 8 cards “in the kitty” to be used as a sealed pack for new...

Got some testing in on MH2 cards last night! Esper Sentinel: This guy made me, a Sultai Magecraft player, sweat big time when dropped T1 from across the table, and I ended up spending 3 on Kaleidoscorch to kill him so I could continue playing Magic. Very cool proactive midrange card for White...

    Attack on Cube (2021 Update)

CUBE NIGHT REPORT! Had a great draft tonight with me, 2 pals, and my wife graciously filled in to make a pod of 4! We cut off early due to the guys living in a faster time zone, but we were able to play 2 of the 3 planned rounds before it ended. DECKS Me: Sultai Gifts/Breya (2-0) Wife: Gruul...

    Sets (MH2) Modern Horizons 2 Testing/Includes Thread

the cycling alone makes it a very good retail level 6-drop, and it seems like foods get more and more odd applications in each set, i’d test it if the power level is right.

    Got excited for a second

“this just in, President Joe Biden announced today that he regularly frequents the Magic: the Gathering cube architecture forum known as Riptide Lab. Mr. Biden would not comment on his cube list or username, saying only, ‘it’s a pretty low power cube but me and Barry and the gang have a good...

    General Fight Club

yeah, that’s where it falters. Green decks MIGHT be running 17 lands but probably more like 15, and while there are things like Vengevine and Lingering Souls in the format, you’re much more likely to want to bin lands and grab a nonland than the other way around. my new format and wayfinder are...

    General Hold up there, "partner."

looking closer at the mechanic, i think “partner with” cards are a perfect use case for squadron picks, where you pick one, get the other from the basic land box.

    General Fight Club

yeah, what i realized is that my whole environment isn’t really designed to have wayfinder in it. yards fill up FAST with no help needed from self millers, and since most decks operate fine on 2-4 lands, the 2 mana landtrip effect isn’t valuable either. not to mention the 1/1 body being more or...

    General Fight Club

thanks! that’s kind of where i fell too, with the wall probably being the most generally useful and visionary being the worst. i actually already cut wayfinder because he performed very poorly at my last cube night- the only time my opponent felt “bad” in any of the games was when he cast...

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

thanks! i do appreciate everyone who has chimed in and helped me hammer out the designs here/in the discord, i am not great at fine tuning so it really helps, especially since i’m designing cards for a cube that’s only a notch or few below “fairmax,” where the line between “playable” and “GRBS”...
