General Magical Christmas Land (Draft Format)

Hey guys, I was thinking of doing something special for the holiday season. Magical Christmas Land (MCL)! It's not very fleshed out yet, but the basic idea is to let players draft a Tri-Land, and that land comes with a bundle of cards from that Shard / Wedge. There would be some constraints...

General MTGO Draft - December 5th, 2PM EST

That's super generous of you! Cards needed are in my current list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Li9IvhqGz2y9WdQmS7n_E-g863Dctw4-yWdBWXCxJrI/edit#gid=0 BUT! I would probably acquire them before the draft so that we could play with the new toys.

I think you have to run cards that excite people. Some degree of power variability is good. I was super happy to have Kiora in my BFZ sealed pool, and would have had less fun playing if it were a River Boa. Infuse with the Elements was powerful in a unique way that caused me to build my pool...

100 card singleton looked like a pretty fun format. One of my old MLG colleagues used to write articles on the format on Pure MTGO.

True story, I once spitballed with Eric a RipLab competition where I would have people submit a brief description of why they thought a given card was the best designed card in history. And then I realized "I'm just going to accept the best description of Clique", and scrapped the idea.

The old "anti-goodstuff" movement from like 6-7 years ago I think did a lot of damage. Good stuff is essential. The question is, what good stuff do we run?

Just regular Dark Jeskai, I'm guessing.

How did we reach this conclusion? Maybe I've misinterpreted.

Do you guys think Dark Jeskai Pyromancer's Goggles could work in Standard?

I don't think Wasteland is brilliant, nor do I think 6CMC land destruction is broken. Just to ground the conversation, here are the hits for "destroy target land" from Ravnica block: Barbarian Riftcutter Ghost Quarter Helldozer Rolling Spoil Seismic Spike Wrecking Ball Wreak Havoc They...

Card/Deck Control Cards that other decks will play

It's pretty borderline. But it's also fun and has play (and counterplay) to it, so I'm not sure.

Is this a good thing? In the abstract if somebody described a set of cards as "maindeckable Blood Moons against half their non-basics that aren't dead in other matches", I'd be super wary.

    safra v Aoret: Non-white 4C Grid Draft

I mean, if you find someone who wants to play, you can post your picks in the thread and then run it on Cockatrice or something.

    safra v Aoret: Non-white 4C Grid Draft

You need MODO and a Skype account. Basically you and a partner make picks over Skype, then import the decks into MODO via Cloudshift and play it out. But you need somebody with access to the RipLab account, and I'm out of the country right now. Contact James, safra or aoret.

General Re-examining The Basic Land Box

I wouldn't suggest unlimited Wastelands, and personally wouldn't want more than 2 in a cube deck. The biggest issue I have with Wasteland in my own cube is that sometimes you just can't play around it. You're a :w::u: deck, and you need your Arid Mesa to grab you blue mana. You have to get a...

To this effect I'd say that an underpowered archetype is far more of a problem than an overpowered one. Given sufficient fixing, players can all divvy up something strong until it is sufficiently weak. You just have to make your archetypes flexible enough. People at my local store believed...

General Re-examining The Basic Land Box

The more I think about this idea, the more I like it. The Fetchland / Wasteland gets far more interesting when you have on color fetches (Scalding Tarn in your :u::r: deck), but it's pretty impractical from a "I need 10 playsets and each playset costs $200" point of view.

I think you make some great points, to which I would say: 1) metagame design is hard. If this site is bad at it, probably part of that can be attributed to the fact that I'm not particularly good at it. The big challenge is that much of our design is still anchored in power-max philosophy...
