General Answers for Tokens

So there are about a million different cards that you can use to support token themes in your cube, that is not what this thread is about. I'm looking for cards to balance having tokens in your cube.

I'm looking for cards that can kill tokens efficiently but can also be put in a cube deck anyways. I'm not sure all of the above meet that criteria but they at least give a general idea of what I'm looking for.

I think Bile Blight is going to be a good card overall. It kills important 3 toughness creatures, wipes tokens (including toughness 3 tokens!) and clears out multis for those that use them. Unlike the old card that did this (echoing decay?) couldn't kill nactyls, which made it pretty much unplayable. The tougher casting cost isn't awesome, but last gasp is hardly uncubable.

For cards that wipe tokens, you can go to every red sweeper ever.

I really wish there was just some massive encyclopedia of cards of every common effect in Magic that was organized for the purposes of cubing (I know about Gatherer). You could browse by color, CMC, effect (naturalize, disenchant, wrath, ramp spells, token spells, tribal significance, etc.). Being able to just look at every red sweeper in Magic, then do some math to figure out just how many you want in your cube and then pick specifically the ones that best meet the needs of your cube would be awesome. Alas I will just have to settle for careful search engine use.

Okay so we have an idea of where to begin in red. So what are some more of these effect in black, blue, and white. Green can barely kill a single creature so we will just give it a pass here, trample works here as well though.

It might also help to know what types of tokens you're pushing. Are they mostly 1/1 soldiers, or do they fly? Are there any as big as 3/3? If 2/2's are your biggest problem, Pyroclasm or Staggershock can go a long way, though they also deliver some collateral damage towards the fair aggro decks.

Most colors have smaller tokens but green will drop the beef on the table. Most of the token support in centered in white with support branched into other colors which has a bunch of 1/1s with and without flying, though anthems can make them more sizable. I just saw Staggershock in another thread and got pretty excited about 30 seconds ago. Completely forgot Repeal was a Magic card. This is a decent start. I need to figure out how dense to make the token killers, though I guess that will depend on the density of token generators.

Has anyone here tried Cyclonic Rift in their cube? I'm pretty sure Echoing Truth isn't good enough, though I could be wrong.

There we go, those are especially awesome since they are colorless and thus go in any deck(albeit, not every deck actually wants one).

rift is great especially in UG or similar that can hit the overload due to ramp and have the board presence to alpha strike after

I don't see much reason to run stuff like Bile Blight or Sever or Echoing Truth in what is, after all, still much closer to a singleton format than "people playing Nightveil Specters and Boros Reckoners." Stuff like Detention Sphere or MPulse or Rift do enough work. I second the Repeal and Bomb and Explosives suggestions too. Regular sweepers are fine too (Martial Coup?!) and remember, tokens are supposed to be good against spot removal.

a new card y'all could possibly be interested in is Whelming Wave

Well I suspect it's mostly to do with making sure RtR's token themes manageable, but yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if part of the unbanning reasoning was 'look at all the hate from the last 3 years that murderises faerie tokens'.

Shouldnt this thread be called destroying tokens?

Tokens are quite heavy in my cube too so its something ive been thinking about as well. Am considering bile blight but uncertain about adding more heavy black casting costs. Mulling over echoing decay. Im not sure how much specific removal you beed outside of sweepers and things like arc lightning. You could consider massacre wurm/ thrashing wumpus/ pestilence though. Also that ooze with dredge that kills things equal to cc depending on number of counters on it (sorry on phone at mo so cant look up) but thats prob too deep.

also Thundercloud Shaman, Gloomdrifter

I love this song, everytime I see the card Bonfire I think of this song.

As far as pingers are concerned, love Cunning Sparkmage, not sold on Staticaster since it cannot go to the dome and seems like a completely dud against midrange or control decks.
