General Baseless Speculation: Will Modern Masters be a good draft set?

Onderzeeboot

Ecstatic Orb
I've been drafting Commander 2014 / Planechase 2 / Commander 2013 today (with Forge), and I wish it was a retail format. It's an absolute hoot to play (even though the occasional Sol Ring is super overpowered) :D

Colorless Mythic Cycle basically confirmed. 3 Eldrazi, 1 Karn, 1 Wurmcoil.

This set is expensive for a set that won't even have goyf. I foresee a possible unbanning & reprinting of everyone's favorite mindsculptor...but that's just baseless speculation.

Jace the Mind Sculptor will never be unbanned in Modern, ever. Brainstorm is too powerful for the format, so 'brainstorm every turn except also a really hard to fight win condition' is totally out of the question imo

also they just reprinted Wurmcoil in the C14 red deck so i don't think they'd have those so close together. Blightsteel's due for a reprint right??

?? brainstorm is miles better than jtms

i dont really like brainstorm much and hope it gets banned in legacy

I got a little tickled that the 'new' etched champion art has it in a gold metal instead of its regular silver. It's in the same pose and everything!

The Modern Masters set idea is a good one, but the extremely limited printing combined with higher base price pulls the product out of the range of the people who need it most, which seems counter-productive for the set's goals. The rich get richer etc.

If they wanted to make it actually effective at reducing the price of modern card they wouldn't have made it 10$ a fucking pack

Oh wait, people would buy this set if it was 30$ a pack! Man! They sure are exercising restraint here! I may just congratulate them by buying a box to draft this shitty shitty format

Eh, I feel like the people complaining about the pack price are barking up the wrong tree. Other than on release day, you couldn't find Modern Masters packs anywhere for the MSRP of $6 a pop. Within a week or two, retailers were selling them for $10, and often more, so they're just reflecting reality now by telling you that they're $10.

If they could loosen the reins on the print run this time around, though, that would help with both pack prices and fulfilling the supply bottleneck for the Modern card pool.

I mean I kinda feel bitter every time I buy sealed product, but shit like from the vault sets and modern masters continues to rub me the wrong way like a sandpaper handjob.

I get scarcity sells. I also get that wizards would have to take some drastic steps for people to stop buying magic cards altogether. But when I went and saw Guardians of the Galaxy, I had a lot of fun despite that it was produced for basically the same reasons: We know you'll get this regardless of what we do.

Maybe I should de-foil my cube. I'd have a lot less incentive to keep pursuing cards like this and being disappointed if I could regularly get versions of cards I wanted, rather than having to participate in the momentous undertaking that is a 2 sets of foil fetchlands and shocklands each. I dunno. I like things being nice and uniform, but I think there's a few cases where FTV foils look better or are cheaper than their regular counterparts.

Meanwhile over here, all of my Onslaught fetches are proxies! The only foil I used to run was a Torch Fiend that a guy donated to my cube, but I cut that bugger a while ago.

I will say that I enjoy the look and feel of a sweet tricked-out cube, but personally I just grab the cheapest non-ugly version of every card that I can find. I also have a theory that the more people foil out their cubes, the more reluctant they are to swap out those cards that they've invested so much time and effort into hunting down. In turn, this may be what leads to people being unusually defensive about particular card choices on other forums, sometimes ignoring all reason to include cards that are clearly no longer worth their salt. Sticking with cheap, regular versions of cards means I feel no guilt or regret whatsoever when I axe any so-called 'staple'.

When I was first building my cube, I was seeking out all sorts of promos and foils. While I enjoyed how sweet it looked, I have since downgraded everything to non-promo non-foil black-bordered versions and am quite satisfied with it. I have retained one vanity: beta cards. God damn do I love beta cards.

(stuck to unlimited for rares though, ain't no one got time for beta savannah and such)

My onslaught fetches were proxies as well before kahns came out, FWIW.
I do have one admission: How do you run white border volcanic hammers? That's one I can't really bring myself to change. Unless yours are portal? o.O
I've no reservations in cutting cards I spent forever tracking down in foil because that value just goes straight into my binder. Hell, I've done that intentionally before! Some EDH Staple being mediocre in my cube is waaaay better served being 50$ in trade than being a solid 10th pick with nostalgia tags

No, I do run white-bordered Volcanic Hammer. It's one of the ugliest cards in my cube, but it's also one of the things my cube is known for at this point. So I might as well leave that talking point as it is - it's getting attention!

Someone just pointed out that I am running the ugliest Duress there is. I hadn't even thought about it.

It's white bordered I don't know if you can tell..

As the last carrier of the foil cube in my area, I can say that this affect exists among others but I personally stave it off. The #1 worst thing about having a foil cube is having to police your players- I can't just let some random person sit down at my cube. I caught the first person trying to swipe something and since have kept my cards on lockdown.

Maybe this thing will make zendikar fetch foils cheaper? ...right.

Eric, ask yourself this honestly: Would people really think you sold out that underground cubing spirit if you got foil 8th/9th ones? :p

A CLASSIC!!! i love how this is the image that comes up when you mouse over an scg decklist. though the outfits are too much for even mathais hunt

I'm starting to think about artifact themes + signets might be likely.
Signets enable a lot of cool stuff. Like wildfires!

I also think we need to look more closely at subthemes because those are the ones we forget and those are also the ones that tend to get along best cross block.

... cross block.

Wait, this isn't actually continuing on from MM1 is it? Like you don't draft it MM1 > MM2 > MM2 do you? (Or however that would be arranged)

If I'm already as pissed as I am and we have ~4 cards spoiled (There's an art for what is almost unmistakably eteched champion, and Emrakul's card number is 2, so either All is Dust, Eldrazi Conscription or Artisan of Kozilek precedes him) I doubt I'll be alone if for some reason we need to track down other different limited print run stupidly expensive packs to draft this sonofabitch
