Just in case the thallid theme in your cube is getting out of hand, they printed a hilarious hate card for it.

On the serious side, it murders planeswalkers and messes with the +1/+1 counter theme which is something.

Is it weird that I love Cryptic Command and kinda don't wanna run the blue confluence because it costs too much?

I'm finally starting to drink the kool-aid with this whole "lower your curve" thing and now this...

I'm thinking of running mystic confluence over cryptic as its more splashable and blue has too many 4's anyway. I'm not sure I want both.

Mystic confluence seems stupid pushed to me. The white and red confluences are good, but they kinda pale in comparison. I would say basically every mode on the blue confluence is good against almost every deck (in cube at least), whereas the red and white confluences have some rather corner case modes which while very strong in the right situation can be useless against some decks. I like Scourge of Nel Toth. Arachnogenesis seems cool too. A fog that advances my board state? sweet.

Unless you regularly generate 6 +1/+1 counters on a single creature and can afford to throw them out, Karlov is just as poisonous as Ajani's Pridemate. He's just more pushed at the cost of going in fewer decks.

Pridemate decks regularly get him to 6/6-8/8 which would bring Karlov to 10/10-14/14 that can toss out 1-2 unmakes. The decision, I think, is deciding if you want a card that is poisonous, but extremely pushed in a specific deck. I can see good arguments on both sides of the issue. If your good stuff is really good, then bomby cards help niche archetypes compete. If your good stuff is less good, niche archetypes are already strong and deciding games by bombiness is less appealing.

Actually I think the power level makes it less poisonous. If the reward is twice as great, you need fewer lifegain triggers in your deck to make it worthwhile. Karlov can more organically become threatening than Pridemate (who needed a ton of support).

I think that's probably what most folks who end up running it will do. I just can't. Cryptic is wayyyy too much of a pet card.

I mean, Cryptic is still amazing in Modern. What classifies as a "pet" card in this day and age?

Any guesses what the black confluence will do?

Necromantic Confluence {3}{B}{B}
Sorcery
* Raise Dead
* Each opponent discards a card
* Disfigure

I feel that has to be pretty close. Disfigure is a bit weak though. I can see that line being Diabolic Edict or Murder and not being overpowered. The only other line I could see this having would be 'Destroy target Planeswalker', but having two destroy effects on the card makes it seem too narrow.

While we are at it may as well guess the green one:

Tranquil Confluence {3}{G}{G}
Sorcery
* Rampant Growth
* Awaken the Bear/Earthen Arms
* Plummet?

But if I were a real sadist it would be:

Hulking Confluence {3}{G}{G}
Sorcery
* Put target noncreature permanent on top of its owners library
* Return target card from your graveyard to your hand
* Creatures you control get +1/+1 and trample until end of turn
Exile Hulking Confluence.

The green one has already been spoiled:

Verdant Confluence GG4
Sorcery
Put 2 +1/+1 counters on target creature
Return target permanent card from your gy to your hand
Search for a basic, put into play tapped

But then wouldn't Voracious Wurm is less poisonous then Grizzly Bears?

Obviously making a card more powerful makes it more playable, but when someone says "poisonous" I think of the design. Voracious Wurm to me is more poisonous because the design demands a very specific set of circumstances to be effective. Grizzly Bears just suck.

The fact that its a 2 mana investment that grows into a 4/4 or 6/6 is a pretty big deal, and much better than a card that grows into a 3/3 or 4/4. Its a more competitive body, that dosen't require the amount of support that something like pridemate does.

Edit: jason beat me to it

That's fair, I just think the term is less useful when we roll power level into it. We already have plenty of language for describing cards in that way.
