General Custom Cards: The Lab

Okay okay here's a mesmeric fiend for you:
X(b/w)
Creature-whatever tribe YOU push
This enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.
"The same rules text as mesmeric fiend"
0/0

I may be wrong but i'm thinking at x=0 that's a castigate? If that's too good, we could totally restrict the in-hand targets.

Secondary version:
X(w/b)(w/b)
Creature
Same rules text as above
1/1 or 2/2

Not if you use Brain Maggot's wording instead! That's an awesome tweak actually. I'm tempted to make it this:

Mesmeric Hypnotist {X}{U/B}
Creature - Human Wizard
Mesmeric Hypnotist enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.
When Mesmeric Hypnotist enters the battlefield, target opponent reveals his or her hand and you choose a nonland card from it. Exile that card until Mesmeric Hypnotist leaves the battlefield.
When Mesmeric Hypnotist dies, draw a card.
0/0

At one mana it's a sorcery speed Peek!

Alright hold up I missed this :p

B1 2/1 Mesmeric Fiend was be real strong when I had it. Not like Tarmogopf over the curve strong, but like Shriekmaw or Lightning Bolt strong. Good, but likely not actually making it's way through standard.

BB 2/2 Mesmeric Fiend was better, and probably in the right place I think. I do still love Actual Tidehollow Sculler though, so if you don't it won't change your mind.
WW Cartel Aristocrat is in my cube now, though she hasn't been drafted yet. It's a bit more of a synergy pick, since losing a creature to save your 2/2 isn't usually a good trade, so things like Earthquake or Brindle Shoat or TukTuk need to get involved before it's playable. That being said it's likely the only good way white is ever getting a good sac outlet, so judge that for what it's worth.

I think the X spell versions are just more power for power's sake. These discard versions are supposed to be early disruptive creatures. Nobody saw scuttling doom engine and went: "Wow, I wish this had ravenous rats' trigger, it would make so much sense"

Well of course it's power for power's sake! If your tempo-discard guy is castable at any point on the curve, and can even be a pseudo-spell turn one, that's big game! It's like how Grenzo is great as a 2/2 in aggro but can also go into a control deck as a 5/5 if need be. Cost flexibility has got to be at least top 5 in terms of power-adds that work well in a cube environment.

magic set editor

Create with Magic Set Editor (God I hope this thing works on windows 10, though I have no reason to believe it won't other than sheer paranoia)
Host Images VIA Imgur (This barely matters, but browsing images is easy and uploads is easy, so fuck everyone else)

Actually putting customs in your cube will require cubetutor premium (5$ to his patreon IIRC), which lets you upload scans of your cards, so you put chimney imp in your cube, set it's CMC to 2 and then upload the scan of whatever Black 2 Drop you made

imgur does not let you put more than 300 images in an album unless you pay them which is a problem if you want to do a completely custom cube

Guys can you tell me anything you've noticed about UG decks that makes them work? Are glaring or subtle problems? Archetypes of note and cards that seem important?

I kinda wana make some ug cards to help dust them off a little but right now I'm seeing mostly in the ghetto of ramp and 4 Colour enabling.

Currently running sort of a CoCo/flash/aggro control sorta archetype but it's in early stages.

I want a black Wild Mongrel. With the realization that Wild Mongrel is probably a little weak these days.

Flesh Maggot 1B

Discard a card: ~ gets +1/+1 and Deathtouch until end of turn.

Liliana's Touches B
Whenever a player discards a card, choose one:
that player loses 1 life
that player gains 1 life
each player discards a card. Sacrifice this permanent.

I've participated in a Build-your-own Cube draft a couple of weeks ago (no, I'm not dead in a ditch somewhere) and came up with this mechanic that was inspired by the Riptide Lab<3:
Conehead Zombie.jpgGoblin Patron.jpg
Nedrys Security System.jpgSteppe Lion.jpg
Druid of the Combine.jpgNether Star.jpg
(Conehead Zombie was waaaaay more OP than expected, especially because there was a Hidden Agenda Conspiracy that made it into a Man-'o-War as well)

And a couple more cool cards

Omigosh I really like that druid. Recently Jason talked about how "generically pickable monocolor good stuff" is healthy for a cube and that druid really fits the bill. Without being ridiculous Batterskull generically-pickable.

I am not sure how I feel about redundance being on the card.

Energy Torrent {X}{1}
Sorcery
Target opponent chooses one:
You draw X cards.
You deal X damage to target creature or player and gain that much life.
Destroy up to X target artifacts, enchantments, or tapped creatures.
Kicker 1: Choose one option. Opponents cannot choose that option.

If a spell might act blue, red, or any other color but you don't have full control over it, can it be colorless?

What do you think about giving your opponent options with a kicker to restrict their choices?

I don't know, it's a funny card though!
