Sets [FIN] [UB] Final Fantasy

That’s why I voiced my personal disappointment but also said I’m glad it does resonate with others. To each their own. I do sincerely hope the success of this IP won’t sway WotC to adopt anime as the main art style for their main sets, because it’s really, really not my jam.

The sales succes of Universes Beyond has already swayed WotC into the decision to make all UB sets Standard legal. Now it’s truly Iron Man vs Sonic in Standard paper Magic. There should be a bigger uproar over UB.

Best selling set is not a criteria that I care about. None of us should. Only Wizards.

But best selling means something. I'm not huge on capitalism either, but as I said before, there is also the aspects of joy brought to so many players.

The fact that non-Magic players are voting with their wallets does not help the game overall.

Sorry, but this is just gatekeeping. What makes you more of a magic player than someone who picks up the game through whatever UB set? Also, two facts for you: 1) the majority of player coming to mtg through UB stay. 2) most people buying UB are already mtg players anyway.

UB bothered me way more when it first released, but with all of WoTCs decisions in the past few yeas I just don't really care anymore. They killed Constructed for the most part in favor of Commander, they shoveled in way too much product to keep up with yearly, and they've mostly abandoned classic Magic aside from a new set once in a while. If they don't care about their own unique IP why should I?

Magic IP just doesn't matter at all under this leadership and they're way past the point of return. I would have liked it if they had the foresight to think of Constructed before injecting it fully into the game, but it's too late for any of that as Orcish Bowmasters and The One Ring have shown. There's way too much demand for this product and leadership doesn't give one shit about diluting their brand if it means lining up their pockets. Long term consequences? That's for the next CEO to figure out.

Might as well just embrace the stuff you like and ignore what doesn't appeal to you. Hell, nowadays I'll ignore whole Magic original sets like Outlaws and Aetherdrift if I find the aesthetic absolute dogshit whereas before I'd try to make time for each prerelease and draft sets a few times. For UB I'll straight up just ignore whole releases that don't appeal to me like Doctor Who or new Jumpstart cards only in shitty mobile game anime art treatment.

I can answer those questions for you.

We still need to see some data on that that distinguishes joy from sales. So far no arguments has been presented.

No that is not just gatekeeping.

I am not more of a Magic player.

You are allowed to present your sources if you want your arguments to be taken into consideration. As for now they are discarded until sources has been provided.

Truth

Previously WotC cared about making money. And they did it by making a solid product that could stand on its own legs.

Now they care about making money. At. Any. Cost.

Game isn’t for us anymore. There should have been a bigger uproar but too many ‘Just let people enjoy the new things’ killed the game’s chance of enduring before the point of no return.

All we can do it make our voice be heard. The biggest sin is to be quiet.

I would have agreed with that early on, but with the insanely successful sales of LoTR and with Final Fantasy being sold out across the board already (prerelease is going to be insanely packed in my local area), it's clear that WoTC has zero incentive to change course. And even their internal decisions with printing direct to Modern and just upending whole "eternal" formats with each Horizons release and introducing virtual rotation with new staples. It's just a different way they manage the game nowadays.

The player base isn't a monolith that can be consolidated to vote with their wallet or voice at this point because as much as we might dislike certain decisions it's clearly fine for a vast majority of people who will continue to buy anything that they shovel out. It is what it is unfortunately.

Yep we wholeheartedly agree. We are past the point of no return. The next CEO will not be popular if they try and bring the game back to the players that gave them succes (by being happy consumers, not trying to give extra special credit to us or anything, just stating facts) so that is not an option. We are stuck with this trend now. Adapt or be gone. I have chosen (for years) to complain. But soon I will be gone because the game doesn’t feel like Magic anymore. There are little over twice as many players in the game counting everyone now compared to before Magic Arena. But I bet many people will not have the same quality experience playing the game. It’s more of a grind than your favorite game now. This last part is not a fact but just my personal guess.

People buy stuff they like. Considering mtg is a game, those are probably more or less the same.

Both things that MaRo revealed multiple times on blogatog, trying to calm people that couldn't accept the change either.

All we can do it make our voice be heard. The biggest sin is to be quiet.

Are we talking about ways to stop neo-fascism or is this still about a card game?

I don't like UB either, and I don't put those cards into my cubes, so they don't affect me. I get it a little bit with constructed players, but still, this is was the majority of mtg players wants. If it wasn't, they wouldn't do it.

That’s a fallacy and has no merit in the real world.

There is a minority who wants it. But it still sells enough to be worth it if you only want what is good for the company the next 2 years. You can study this if you feel like you have the time. The CEO will be rewarded for a profitable year which is their main objective at Hasbro. The CEO that brings back the game will not be successful so it is never going to happen hence the point of no return is behind us.

Can you prove that? Because what I heard is that the FFN prerelease is alteady selling seats like hot cakes.

Final Fantasy Prerelease was never mentioned before. We were talking about paper Magic.

Go ahead and enjoy your SpongeBob vs Ninja Turtles in Standard. You got what you deserved.

But ... you play paper magic at prereleases?

Go ahead and enjoy your SpongeBob vs Ninja Turtles in Standard. You got what you deserved.

I don't. But I don't play standard, I play formats I enjoy, which is mostly cube and then select retail limited drafts. All I want you to do, is allow yourself to be happy even in the face of developements you don't like. It's all about focus and finding ways to accept things, especially when it is about something as unimportant as a card game.

“All dolphins are whales, but not all whales are dolphins.”

I don’t know how to be allowed to be happy to play Standard when there are SpongeBob, Spice Girls, Factorio and Power Rangers roaming around among Zendikar, Ravnica and Rath.

Can you tell me and the millions of old fans how to get back what we lost at a competitive level ?

“All dolphins are whales, but not all whales are dolphins.”

You claimed that only a minority would cause these incredible sales. I said that's not true because I heard that prerelease will be heavily attended. You now claim that this is somehow not paper magic. Okay, let's say I accept that, that still doesn't speak against the fact, that a huge majority enjoys mtg x final fantasy.

Look, if you really, really want to be sad and mad, I can't stop you. But don't act like there are 90% of mtg players standing behind you when it is actually the other way round.

I don’t know how to be allowed to be happy

Acceptance. Do that first, then you can find ways to enjoy this card game again or, if that's not possible, other ways to enjoy your life (without mtg). You can't change it.

we got a bunch of new spoilers, all kinds of legends blah blah whatever
(the gimmick where the Cid card is "you can play any number" and there's one art per Cid is pretty good, I will admit)

Behold! Everyone's new favorite cube mechanic! It's just "kicker again":
