General Embrace the Chaos / Cube Occasionals

A danger of having distinct themes in each guild section card is that so many of them will be ignored, resulting in lots of dead cards in the draft. Not a dealbreaker, but Cube Occasionals are made to solve this problem. If you're talking about the "guilds" as in "cards of either of these two...

General Embrace the Chaos / Cube Occasionals

This is the v5: Sattelite modules approach I tried, described in: https://riptidelab.com/forum/threads/modular-cube.1940/#post-77549 It has many advantages and actually plays well. The biggest issue is that archetypes are so foundational to a cube that changing even this handful of cards...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Rite of Belzenlok is pretty good in sacrifice decks. It's 4 tokens for 4 mana + a 6/6 flier two turns from now that enables your death triggers. Also a reasonable card on defense, as 4 chumpers stall the ground quite a bit. It's not 360 powermax material, but I wouldn't call it terrible.

I need a white midrange creature or two. How strong is this? How interesting? Cavalier of Dawn

General How to execute a minimalist Artifact theme

Yeah, the artifacts deck and the spells deck becomes sort of at odds with each other. I wish they had printed more spells with investigate, I liked how it played, they work in both these archetypes, and the draw keeps the game flowing.

Branching Evolution seems to be a fixed Hardened Scales. With all the payoffs available for +1/+1 counters, I don't think I'll run it, but it's a new option for a slot that was either really strong or kind of weak.

    Simplicity Cube

Been drafting some decks. Cube Cobra bots are too biased, so I keep getting the same cards I consider good and they don't. As an aside, with all the deathtouch, I think some thing like Lavamancer's Skill could be an interesting.

    Simplicity Cube

I like the new iteration a lot! (But let me nitpick a bit more!) I didn't play much DOM draft to remember how good it is, but Charge seems a bit redundant with Glorious Anthem, and the tokens deck doesn't look like it needs more help. White and blue have a ton of fliers. Green has some...

General Spells Matter: Astonished With a Freedom

Yeah, Abbot was never particularly interesting or good for me either. It's quirky in that it's a bad T2 bad. You usually play it on T3 before land drop, but then you can't play a 3-drop, and 2/1 prowess is not very impressive. As Chris said, the 1 toughness means the prowess is not particularly...

I dislike counters on lands because stacking them becomes awkward - same issue of Vivids. That's the only reason why I'm not snap including the thriving lands. One workaround is to have color counters that can go inside the sleeve. Very practical for 2 color decks.

    Simplicity Cube

Squall Drifter looks very similar to Niblis of the Urn but plays very differently. Squall Drifter is a Suntail Hawk that pecks for 1 until the big dudes are deployed by the opponent, then it's Icy Manipulator. Niblis of the Urn is much more aggressive, as you can't use it for defense at all, so...

It's a great payoff for the black discard deck, which really doesn't have much beyond Davriel, Rogue Shadowmage and The Rack. Unfortunately, it's quite narrow. Tinybones helps the discard deck immensely, but it doesn't make it easier to integrate it with other archetypes.

Goblins, wizards, tokens, and spells matter? That's quite the cog in my cube.

Maybe I'm focusing too much on the discard ability. When you don't have to use it, it's a straight up card advantage engine. Yeah, I think this is perfect actually - goes well with Curiosity, Circular Logic, Dive Down, and One with the Wind.

Barrin seems like a great single-card archetype! I don't think I run anything that actually goes well with him, though. The best would be Into the Roil? If you run bouncelands or the Crystal Shard-flavored blink, he's awesome. I'll try Ghostly Pilferer for sure, and I'm cautiously optimistic...

General Spells Matter: Astonished With a Freedom

Izzet Chemister This has been pretty exciting, as it exiles stuff, tensions build up more and more. It's a slow card, but the ceiling is huge and there's plenty of counterplay. Eldraine's adventure mechanic makes spells-matters much easier to support while maintaining a high creature count...

Yeah, I think by a good margin it's better than Flight of Fancy, but that's not saying much. Still gets blown out by instant speed removal (though 3 mana is a lot better than 4). It's not good in Drake Haven control-madness, and the 3 mana make it not great with madness overall. Reanimator...
