That is relevent to a ponder vs. preordain comparison, not a ponder vs. brainstorm comparison in a fetchlandless or fetchland light environment. For your reference, the response to my post which I was responding to was: I don't mean to come across here as rude, but I really don't see what...

There might be some exaggeration there; can't say for sure as I've never played the format. I just know its possible for formats to get so condensed that 4 drops become a lot worse. Thats why you have the design shift towards having ETB attached to them, to help make up for the loss in spell...

You don't need any other card for ponder to function as one of the best draw smoothers every printed. I don't even see how this is a point of contention. You keep on insisting that ponder needs shuffle effects, and it really dosen't, in any way shape or form.

Just to clarify for those following along but who hasn't really played with these cards in the wild: with the right support, brainstorm is much more powerful of a card than preordain or ponder (both of which are very powerful cards in their own right) and plays completely different. Preordain...

I think that helps illustrate one of the big differences: turn one preordain or ponder is generally fine, turn one brainstorm is generally a misplay.

Lucus is probably right about that: once your format becomes about spell velocity, 4 drops become quite a bit worse.

Maybe you want to run more cabal therapy?

Over here the the first few turns are usually spent on development of some kind, so persecute ends up in a sweet spot where it isn't wreaking some guys early development, but it still has targets by the time it comes online. The format is also grindy enough where if you get hit by it, you will...

I was thinking of looking at: esper charm mardu charm inquisition of kozilek cabal therapy unmask thoughtseize rakdos's return liliana of the veil kolaghan's command entomber exarch demonic pact blightning For a higher power format. No idea though

Legacy is my favorite format to watch. Tom Ross playing infect is always awesome. Check out this insane match. Game 3 is legendary, and starts at about 28:37. This is the kind of stuff that made me really start to rethink the way I approached aggro. This is such a well played match on...

The next level way to play persecute is to run it alongside into the roil, repeal, or remand to make sure you hit something. In the resdesign cube I even slotted in evacuation, because thats basically the dream. Than there is the stone cold soul read persecute where you figure out what they...

Is there a reasonable alternative for discard other than thoughtseize? I've been loving persecute, but I realize thats probably not going to make the cut for you guys.

RBM might ultimately be right about consul's Lieutenant. I've not played with the card in cube, and it is a really well designed renown card. My issue with it is that it takes a lot of work to get to the point where you can anthem with it, and usually I find those attack anthem's too clunky. But...

Thats another metagame relationship thats usually missing with higher power cubes: a density of good discard. Thoughtseize, cabal therapy, and inquisition of kozilek are the only playable ones, and thoughtseize is miles better than the other two. The lack of it dovetails into the viability of...

The floor is a lot worse because of brainstorm lock, even if you are casting it EOT (which is not how you want to be casting brainstorm). Impulse or even telling time are better in that spot. My guys don't have a legacy background, so when I went up to multiple brainstorms I was pretty...

How do you want the cards to interact with your removal? There are a few cards that I really dislike: aether adept vexing sphinx reckless reveler humble defector Aether adept's package I think is largely obsolete in most cubes, though if you are to run that card, I would much rather...

In pauper, you have the option of running preordain, ponder, and brainstorm in the mono blue delver decks. Those decks have no shuffle effects (outside of the shuffle effect if you pair brainstorm with ponder, which I have tried and discarded as being poor). I consider ponder to probably be...

I agree that it can be a fun card that people would enjoy playing, and in that context it would be fine to support. Brainstorm is an iconic card for a lot of people, and a certain amount of subconscious bias goes with that, which is fine to appeal to. However, we go some pretty extreme lengths...

Just want to say I agree with the notion of sea gate being a control card rather than anything else, and that we tend to overload on card selection in blue. I was a bit hesitant to post because of the controversy it would cause, but i.m.o. we tend to really overload on specifically brainstorm...
