General Optimal Draft Variants for Less than 8 Players

This is an excellent first post! Welcome to the forums! :)

    General On clones

I should probably rephrase that question, because yes, I do think there should be cards that don't tunnel you into an archetype. What I should have asked instead is, why do those cards have to be colorless bombs? (And yes, I do consider Metamorph a bomb.)

I agree! Is it though? Honest question, because I don't think it is.

    General On clones

I had it in my cube for a long time, and Metamorph, while very good, isn't actually too problematic in play, the problem I have with it is that it doesn't add any tension to the draft. You see this p1p1, you pick it and you know it's going to make your deck, and you know it's going to be good...

    General On clones

IT'S A TRAP! I mentioned this card in the generic p1p1 thread. It's just such a safe an powerful pick, for any deck, I believe this is possibly the worst clone effect you can run, unless you run a high powered cube with more generic powerful colorless picks (I'm talking Wurmcoil Engine and...

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

Sweet ;) Remind me to look up those arts for you, I really don't have the time to do that today, but I can look for you later, maybe tomorrow.

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

That would mean plucky would be on average turned on for a player in 30% of their games. If that's the average percentage you want to run with in your games, I think I'ld prefer the "if you lost the previous game this match" wording. Dunno, but that feels the tiniest bit less complex and more...

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

But you just lost the previous game! :) Like I already said though, the biggest argument against only having plucky be active when you're actually behind, is that it only ever activates in the second game of a match if you lost the first game. From a design perspective, that would make plucky...

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

Well, if you lost the first game, and you end up winning the match, you came back from 0-1 behind. If you won the game, then you just lost the previous game, so you're also coming back from behind in that sense. On the other hand, I really dislike mechanics that do nothing, and the wording you...

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

So, looking at that card... Someone made blended frames using the old card border colors with the newest border style?

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

Maybe "then put a card from your hand on the top or bottom of your library"? Doesn't seem much stronger than "draw a card, then discard a card".

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

On the other hand, you're winning. Losing is a bigger punishment anyway. Also, the whole purpose of this mechanic was that it was a catch-up mechanic, so changing it to "if you've already finished a game this round" kinda defeats the purpose?

    General Fight Club

Yes it does. Surprisingly it's not one of the four you already mentioned. Garruk, Primal Hunter This guy's a beast! Erm... Builds a beast! Seriously though, the free beast each turn is much better than Gideon's ally, and he does card advantage as well!

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

    I don't buy it. :P

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

The base effect should be designed such that it is serviceable but slightly subpar, then slightly above average when plucky kicks in. I don't like your second suggestion, as this means you won't turn on plucky in the third game when you win the first game but lose the second. If you play three...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Ok, that has the delay, but not the narrowness I like :P Also, it's sloooooooooow! :P

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

Plucky means "having or showing determined courage in the face of difficulties." :) I agree that Spell Slink has a substantial upgrade, but Syncopate is certainly playable in limited, in part thanks to the exile clause.

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

This clearly looks like a mechanic that should be in all colors to me. Blazing Breath is boring, but effective, and I would so play the heck out of Spell Slink! Also, I like the white design much better with the new name and effect ;)

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

It's cool, good counterarguments force you to better think about why a certain card would be a better fit. In a vacuum, Mystical Tutor is simply the better card, so I better had a reason why I wanted to try Personal Tutor rather than Mystical (other than that I happen to own Personal Tutor) :)
  20. Onderzeeboot

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

True, but I happen to own a Personal Tutor, and not a Mystical Tutor :) Mainly though, I like the play pattern of Personal Tutor better in theory, because you can't just go eot tutor, draw the card you needed next turn, you have to actually plan a turn ahead, and your opponent gets a turn to...
