General Custom Cards: The Lab

Missed the card reveal... Also, any ideas on how to make it feel more red? 3 Mana 3/2 haste? Make a red token with haste? There's gotta be more to red than haste, right?

Everything eɔse I came up with felt too powerful... could pump all your creatures, or make it +2/+2? Or something totally different. Mostly I just feel like it needs a 3rd ability

Got a little carried away

So, the basis for the idea: someone pointed out that (especially in faster environments) a lot of the spells matter token producers are very play/draw dependent. So my initial idea was something like a Young Pyro variant with the first upkeep treasure ability(ripped from hearthstone) to help alleviate that issue.

Which turned into this monstrosity

I mean.. as always any card can be fine because it is totally dependent on the cube it goes into.

One of the most fun cube drafts I’ve ever tried was when one of my friends had this design philosophy: “What if Power 9 was the correct power level and all cards have this power level.”

There was a 2 mana Cruel Ultimatum and some 5/5 creatures for 1 mana that also had some form of evasion. It was massively fun. Mana cheat, insane threats and conspiracies. Everything was totally broken.

So there is hope for your Pirate. It just needs the right home.

I've considered building a cube like that. Lightning Bolt deals 5 or 6, and so on. Wonder if pirate boy would be good enough in that kind of format. Probably, moxen and stuff, lot of free spells.

I wonder if it'd be ok in a real slow format

Nope.
It likely comes down on turn 2. It is a 3/2 for three, which is strong for a slow environment but doable. Thing is it has bonkers cardadvantage, which becomes stronger in a slow format.

I play mainly urza block cube. That format is slow, and by that I mean, really really slow.

are playable in that cube. That’s how strong card advantage is in a slow environment.

I don't think that randomly buffing one of the best red cards ever is the way to do this. I'd much rather see new designs like this OP Pirate if I were to make/play a cube like that.

Certainly most cards would be new designs. But trying to get Lightning Bolt close to Ancestral Recall level would help figure out a sort of baseline for the burn in the format

When I was messing with a high power custom cube, I went the opposite way. my Recall variant draws two. I figure Recall is the best power and could take a nerf. You'd still first pick that in most packs, I suspect.

This doesn't need to be a Golem, just used name and art I already had.

Working on Trinket Mage targets. Not sure how much sense a dork makes seeing as they're much better on earlier turns, though
