I'm looking to try this guy in my RG section.

I think he fits pretty well into the RG beats deck and his trigger can help push a little bit of damage through without being ridiculously oppressive like Ruric Thar.

I tried him as I had fond memories of that card from OG Ravnica, but he wasn't worth 3 mana over here. 3/4 with no evasion for 3 is pretty lackluster for a gold card. So I'd personally only run this if you have a ton of activated abilities where the text on this guy will be super relevant. I don't run walkers, so a good reason to run this guy is non-existent in my cube. And I only bring that point up to add context to my opinion of this card. YMMV, and I think the shaman has a higher average case scenario in most other cubes due to the walker interaction. That said, if he's just in there as a beater, I'd pass.

Why would you ever want to run one of these? Either you run both because you love the effect (as I do), or you run neither of them because you hate the effect.

They don't play out in the same way and they are weak to different things. If your opponent is tapped out (which they almost always will be in the phase of the game that Braids is best in), Braids will always take something with it even if it dies which is rough e.g. if you land it T3 on the play. On the other hand, you're a lot more likely to be able to kill it than you are Smokestack, which is hard for many decks to remove and quickly escalates to devour your whole board. Smokestack at least gives you a turn of reprieve though. I can see wanting one and not the other.

I've run both over the years, and I'm pleasantly surprised at how much my players and I've been enjoying Nightveil Specter. Even though devotion isn't a theme in my cube anymore, the extra damage from Specter isn't irrelevant, and it doesn't get randomly blocked by some opponents while sailing right past others; everyone has an equal opportunity to block it. For whatever reason, it's also more fun to "steal" the other player's cards, even though you won't be able to use ~1/3 of them for any given game.

I'd go with Shadowmage there. More relevant creature types, easier to cast, and straight up drawing a card is just so useful. It's exactly the kind of curve filler I'm looking for in my U/B decks, good roleplayer with the 1/3 body to block tiny dudes as well.

Specter leads to more memorable plays; I like Oblivion Sower and don't fully hate Ashiok for the same reasons, especially if you can find room in your heart/Cube for Vivids or other 5C lands
