Sets [ORI] Magic Origins Spoilers

And if you draft Origins you will pick it because it's good limited removal.

Only because all removal is good in limited regardless of how bad it is. Doesn't change the fact that this spell is pretty horrible. You could have printed it at 2R and it sill wouldn't be great.

Is there a 4 mana burn spell that has ever been printed which does less than this thing? Burn Trail if you don't use the conspire. Cackling Flames maybe if you don't think being an instant and having a 5 damage hellbent trigger is worth more than scry 1 (I think it is).

OK. Ire of Kaminari looks awful (never played it though so maybe it's better than it reads).

Cackling Flames is most certainly (way) better than this. Burn Trail is also better, because it has the option to conspire. Not using it in a particular game doesn't make the card worse. The worse burn cards are mostly cards that don't offer the flexibility of going to a creature or to the dome, or are scalable in a bad way (like, you really have to work for it to do more than 3 damage, and it's easy to deal less than 3). I'ld pick the four mana Volcanic Hammer + Scry 1 over any of these:

Here's the 4 mana burn spell that's decent in limited:

Though it hasn't been around for a while.

Also I'd like to take this moment:

This card's name is not what you think it is

Kieryluk's artwork is really... plastic... for this set. That Valor in Akros is real ugly.

I can't quite put my finger on it. I thought it was the background, but there is one, it's just...all sky? It's got contrast, but a bit of an angle upward would have helped things.
The guys on the left are all really spread out, kinda looks like a pawn wall. Also why are they valorous if they outnumber what they're fighting? there's like 5 guys vs 2 harpies!

nitpick:
my memory of seeker of the way in standard is people constantly saying "man this is the worst part of my deck but i don't know anything else to put in this 2 drop slot"
followed by "i wish i drew my soulfire grand master instead" when that came out

everything else in here is cool talk tho carry on

it's a group scene with a "host of enemies", so obv. a thermopylae ref. since akros is basically sparta, in theros

(want it gotta have it)

seeker went from "is this good oh well need a 2 drop" 2-of to "omg this 2 drop is great and can be played in RW/Jeskai/Mardu unlike the other 2 drops that might not suck!" 4-of to "RW/Jeskai/Mardu all suck" 0-of

Basically. When's the last time one affected the board?

Edit: This is the card I was thinking of for some reason, but yeah

There's plenty of creatures, but not many actual spells with discard as a rider. Weird.

A 3 power dude for 3 with upside in black at common? I'll take that in an Origins draft.

Can't help but notice a similar "best of the sets" theme like Modern Masters minus the mishmash of mechanics.

I pitched testing Avaricious Dragon tonight and everyone shot it down since they thought the card sucked. The argument is that it just dies to removal and then screws you. I have a sad.

I don't know, Hixus seems really nice for an environment to me. Flash creatures are a nice mechanic for encouraging draw-go and making counterspells better, but there is sadly a small number of them that are viable. This one doubles as a source of removal for those decks, and also seems like a huge payoff card in a U/W blink deck.

hmmm...maybe he wants a lower power environment where you actively want to discard and go all-in. A real rakdos deck, where he could be a big payoff card.
