Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

How about:

{T}, Pay 1 life: Put a +1/+1 counter on Cruel Sadist.
{2}{B}, Remove X +1/+1 counters from Cruel Sadist: Cruel Sadist deals X damage to target creature and that creature's controller loses X life.

Sassy Sadist {B}
Creature - Human Wizard
{T}, Pay 1 life: Put a +1/+1 counter on Sassy Sadist.
{B}, {T}, Remove X +1/+1 counters from Sassy Sadist: Target creature gets -X/-X until end of turn.
1/2

A good black blocker, but sadly, still costs life.

: )

It's a very dredgy kind of card! What's the general amount of +1/+1 counters we can expect this to deliver?
edit: I wonder what this would feel like with something like dredge 3 on it.

It feels like the kind of card I'd like to be fun and solid and reasonable but when I think about it, seems like a pipe dream.

Losing to swingy pants decks is kinda low on my list and this is like the swingiest of pants cards that only makes its way into one deck and is very rarely capable of giving you a cards worth of value consistently even under those circumstances.

Even if you managed to make a reasonable archetype that was like this card + bloodghast is it's inevitability, you're still talking about one deck being served here for a card that is spotty even in graveyard themed decks. We aint talking about a blocker or a removal spell here.

So, given that I support Grixis, and that it's mostly a control shard, is this playable? I currently run Unscythe, Killer of Kings, but that wasn't very satisfactory for the player who ran it yesterday. The other alternative is a custom card, but I suspect Gem's effect is exactly what a grindy control deck that's looking to get to seven or eight mana is looking for.

Its six mana for 3 cards. I feel like we can do better. Maybe if it was an easier curve but I unno. Do you run cheap answers? You only really wana play this card if you are reliably able to remove something + play it or activate it consistently.

This card at 2, 2 might even be fair.

Actually, the Sphere is plenty playable. It helps that you don't have to pay the cost at once, and you know what you get. For 5-color decks or nongreen decks looking to ramp into big threats, this is a perfectly servicable cube inclusion I think. (This statement obviously doesn't apply to high-powered or really fast cubes.)

Yes, I can acknowledge that someone might want to play that card under some sort of circumstances. It still sorta strikes me as a "bad Inspiration" though, but I'll also tell you I consider cards like Kroasan Tusker and Fact or Fiction to be "good Inspiration"

Does anyone here think 2, 2 Gem is unhealthy in a cube environment? I mean it would be playable occasionally in 2 colour decks that way and not make you feel like shit when you already have your only mountain.

he moved some discussion to the custom cards lab thread so check it out lucre

i personally liked the 1,3 suggestion for gem but he did somethin different

That card just seems so bad. It doesn't ramp, it doesn't get you the card you want most, it's too expensive, and

Guys what do you think about haakon? Are there enough good but not annoying knights? Giving it cycling?
It seems like a really sweet enabler if you can make it work. You know the guy! Anyone else play RAV kami ?

I love Haakon. And I don't think you need knights to make it playable. It's more about having discard outlets. If you can reliably bin it, then you have a 3/3 recurring threat much in the vein of gravecrawler (which works with gravecrawler in fact - Haakon is a zombie after all).

If you also have a knight or two in your deck, well that's gravy. But it's not the ability that is key to Haakon being good IMO.

PS. If you run Haakon, consider also running Nameless Inversion. It's decent removal and obviously is busted with Haakon.

On top of that library isn't a remotely interesting card. It get by on pure power level, the design itself isn't interesting (see: Magus of the Library that no one cares about). Just like I wouldn't be impressed if someone took a lightning bolt, sharpied the three into a, I don't know, seven and started bragging about how great it is, I find Library banal.

I have thought about what Magic would look like if it was balanced around the library/ancestral recall power level and it is pretty difficult to conceive of it making any sense.
