Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Yeah, he's not terrible, just kind of an odd duck. I had him in there mostly to exploit delver's upkeep trigger as a way to filter draws, and to turn cards like vanishment into hard removal. Hedron does the latter better, and mystic was way too slow--and mana intensive--for a delver shell.

If he cost three with maybe three or four toughness, I could see running him in a mill-control deck; however, as a 1/1 for 1 he is a little awkward there, and going into howling mine mode on a 1/1 body is a bit risky.

I can see that. The mana cost might be the deal breaking piece. If it was free, this card would be very powerful. If your deck is built to win via card quality, this effect is ideal. It also doubles as an enabler for reanimator and you can occasionally deny your opponent things they need (plus get information on what they are playing). But all that might not be enough on a 1/1 with a U activation cost. Total bummer. I dig the design a lot.

Would we play it at {1}{U} with no activation cost?

That is, if it was directly comparable to merfolk looter, would it stand up?

Both cards would provide card parity. The looter is a better graveyard outlet. The mystic adds a lot of information into the game. I'm really not sure I'd play it, but I would be more likely to consider it at that cost.

yep -- there is a cost for strong cards' activated abilities

that cost is 0

which do we put in our cubes:

Yeah, I thought that might be the source. Those videos just made it look kind of weak though.

I don't think I ever actually tried it in any variation of my cube though, because of memories. I suspect that if I ran it, the end result would be that it would be a dedicated anti-durdle card, which is a bit too narrow for me.

Yeah that one is still one of my favourites, though I consider all of those cards guilty pleasures when I do get to play with them.
