Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Nightmare is the most broken Cube spell that isn't power and it's not close. It would take very, very brain-dead drafters to not just wreck with it

I have comically bad luck with any deck that has recurring nightmare in it. I mean, I 0-3 if I take it. I think my copy of it is cursed.

But seriously, that card is stupid, even if I like the idea. I've thought about changing "as a sorcery" to "during your upkeep" and even with that dramatic nerf the card is still completely playable, it's scary.

Hear me out! My cube is purposefully removal light (but not empty) and purposefully avoids removal spells that can two-for-one Johnny cards like this (ie, Forked Bolt). And if it survives there's tons of combos with it.

I haven't actually jammed this into my cube yet, but since I'm trying to foster an environment that's Johnny but not well known combos like Reanimator, I feel like it'd be a good addition. Anyone tried something similar?

on an unrelated note the thumbnail for your avatar totally makes that wooden thing in the background look like giant ears

Hah. That's actually the wall. The top white bit is the ceiling, then wall, then a window with sun in it so it's all white. I can't unsee ears now though.

If you're running Elite Arcanist, why not upgrade to/also run...

Have your choice of combos under one convenient creature. Heck, she can give infinite mana and cards on her own with the right instants.
Edit: Oops, probably not on her own. Mana dork or Training Grounds or Reverberate needed first, I guess. Since we're talking Johnny combos, if you can get Pyromancer's Ascension to work...

I like the Sentinel sprite, anotak.

I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but a cousin-card is Isochron Sceptre. It's also possible one of the Panoptic cards is in your wheelhouse.

It's possible that the Septer is the generally more powerful card. In fact, that's almost guaranteed. Comes down earlier, harder to remove, etc. It does remove a large number of the weaker synergies (Burst of Strength, Cerulean Wisps, Hope and Glory, Savage Surge, To Arms!, Triton Tactics, Vitalize), and leaves things like Gigadrowse, which is probably the strongest card anyway.

I may love Arcanist more than I should because he's part of my favorite three card combo in standard that I invented (along with others, I'm sure):

Regardless of which is stronger, I'd definitely be adding either zero or both of those cards. There's enough overlap in the enablers that it'd be silly not to do both.

I don't think this works the way you want it to. When you cast the spells from Kaho they don't get copied, you cast the one you exiled, so it resolves and goes to your graveyard. I think? But that's ok cuz this card is sweet!
Edit: I seriously can't think of any other cool cards from Saviours. 10 points to you!

Do any other cards use the exclamation mark? It's so exciting. I wish I just had shit like "Steppe Lynx!", because I always say them excitedly anyways. How much would I have to pay a card alterer to add exclamation marks to all my cards...

I like that the French 'command names' all have exclamations, and am disappointed English doesn't.

'And bang in the face!' is a way better name than "noggin whack" too.

Somehow I didn't notice your reply until Jason quoted you. Sliped past my radar. Sorry!

I like it. It's starting to look like there's enough disparate power cards to enable this type of thing. I have confirmed that you can only cast the spells from Kaho once (without even more combo parts) so it's got its own set of limitations, but it's a third card to enable these things, and comes with a 3x tutor. That's plenty awesome!

I need to figure out a system for times like these when people give me good ideas about cards I don't own. Currently 0 proxies, and I always forget about the cards before I purchase again. Considering doing short-term proxies to test before buying (mostly for those expensive cards) and also to keep a good list of what I'm missing.

Is this playable? To encourage some overextension and adding some wrath survivability? It feels like a lot of my players are scared of playing aggro because of the mass removal I run.

I don't know how generally powerful your cube is, but it passes the sniff test I apply to retail limited. A 3/3 for 3 is something you're never embarassed to run, it has added utility, and is in colors that often want to overextend. Also is a soldier which sometimes matters. It might be picked lower than it should if your playgroup doesn't understand your intended purpose for it though since a 3/3 for 3 by itself is kinda boring.

That was a card that always looked good on paper, but was pretty worthless in practice, playing out mostly as a multicolor Centaur Courser. I always found that reactive cards never work well in the white weenie type of deck. Persist / undying guys end up playing out much better as wrath protection, along with recurring creatures like Gravecrawler or Vengevine. If you have a Humans theme, Xathrid Necromancer is kind of persist taken to the next level. There's always Ranger of Eos and Reveillark to help the aggro player grind out the control matchups, too.

edit: ninjaed!

Escort is cool if you're trying to protect something like Hero of Bladehold or Baneslayer Angel, but otherwise it's competing with a lot of other cards and offers an effect that's replaceable and doesn't do much.
