Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Usually when he's seen play here, he's made two or three tokens.

Which is probably fine for a two drop that also can swing for 2. And it's actually pretty good if you have ways to abuse tokens.

My stance on this guy is that he is a role-player but is rarely going to be a super star.

Anybody tried this one? I had it in a JOU-The middle one-the other one draft last week and it was pretty fun. Nice with the +1/+1 counter theme and graveyard stuff (which I have very vague plans to bring in)

I ran it for a while, noone ever had any success with it, but then again, my players aren't the best testing base, I think.

It's like a fair Upheaval, except you can't pull off any of the tricks that actually make Upheaval such a monstrous card. I would say Evacuation is at best a very expensive fog that resets a etb creature for yourself, and at worst it's a net mana loss because your creatures are likely to have a higher cmc.

I ran him for a second. He's monstorously slow, but he hits a lot of awesome utility and has trample. Not being able to eat something the same turn seems like its too much of a liability, but you never know. He might come back in, currently phantom nantuko is in that slot and not doing much of anything.

Speaking of Phantom Nantuko, I love Judgment. Some other potential cards that spring to mind:

Also, this card is kind of sweet:

What if we add Haste, and maybe even Flash?

I'd still say it's an aggro card, just a tiny bit slower than most. It has a higher ceiling though.

and man oh man with Deathrite Shaman

I'm thinking about playing one of the W 'gains protection from X until EOT' spells (e.g. Stave Off, Gods Willing) and I remembered this:

Do you want non-white decks having this effect? How much is protection from artifacts worth in your cube? How much is protecting artifacts worth?

Faith's Shield protects anything, costs {W} and has a crazy strong emergency mode. Do you want to be able to counter a vindicate on a planeswalker for {W}? Because Faith's Shield does that.

Shelter gets the big blowouts, but costs a solid two and can only protect creatures.

Emerge Unscathed double triggers out of certain cards and can act as a falter follow up.

Gods Willing gives you scry 1, which is worth something.

I mean, Apostle's Blessing is reasonable enough, but unless you run an obscene number of artifacts or really want non-white decks to have access I think one of the others is probably better.

Its a fair, enchantment's matter friendly version of sinkhole. If anyone should run it, its me, and yet I don't and play the obnoxious sinkhole instead. Possibly designer error, but I remember Blight sucking back in the day as sinkhole 5-8.

sinkhole is OK, i wouldn't fault anyone for running it with black aggro or not running it because there are cooler things to do with that kind of slot. blight is pretty weak.

marchesa is cool but three colors

bloodhall ooze is also cool and is also three colors, i ran it over here for some time and it was not too popular. i think cards like this and vinelasher kudzu and to a lesser extent quirion dryad need to be 'turned on' all the time in order to do anything. i found that they translated poorly to my cube, which has a lot of GB permanents already (i don't think i'll be trying Deathreap Ritual, though someone tell me i'm wrong?) that being said they translated less poorly than Tarmogoyf would to a grim mongo cube

brushhopper, anger, and wonder are cool. glory is comparatively weak

Fecundity draws the owner of a dying creature a card. While more limited in the cards per turn department, Deathreap Ritual is asymmetrical. It's also four mana though, and it has some pretty stiff competition from other Golgari cards for the few gold slots in its guild.
