General The Constructed thread

Tasigur kinda sucks, in general this list is substantially worse than our original with 4 Eidolon 4 Doomwake, looks like the kind of subpar build the CFB and SCG guys trafficked in for a while. I wouldn't want to play Abzan Whip, though, you're just so bad against Ugin and probably not that great against RW. Basically I think you want to be "doing something" in this format (i.e. not playing underpowered control decks like Abzan, UB, etc. with the bad plan of Planeswalkers) and that "doing something" should be able to beat aggro and Ugin, hence Temur Ascendancy.

I'm sure they printed Ugin because they realized Whip was OP.

do you have a Temur Ascendancy list you'd recommend?

I dunno if I recommend this yet but this is my tentative list before our last minute tune-up for SCG Houston:

4 Sylvan Caryatid
4 Voyaging Satyr
4 Courser of Kruphix
4 Eidolon of Blossoms
3 Polukranos, World Eater
3 Temur Sabertooth
1 Nylea, God of the Hunt
1 Karametra's Acolyte
1 Hornet Queen
4 Genesis Hydra

1 Crater's Claws

3 Frontier Siege
3 Temur Ascendancy

4 Frontier Bivouac
4 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
4 Wooded Foothills
4 Yavimaya Coast
1 Temple of Abandon
1 Temple of Epiphany
5 Forest
1 Mountain

SB:
1 Arbor Colossus
2 Kiora, the Crashing Wave
3 Nissa, Worldwaker
3 Nylea's Disciple
2 Reclamation Sage
1 Shamanic Revelation
1 Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
2 Whisperwood Elemental

4 voyaging satyr
2 rattleclaw mystic
4 courser of kruphix
2 boon satyr
4 savage knuckleblade
4 temur ascendancy
4 eidolon of blossoms
1 nylea, god of the hunt
3 genesis hydra
2 temur sabertooth
1 whisperwood elemental
2 hornet queen
4 frontier bivouac
4 nykthos, shrine to nyx
4 wooded foothills
4 yavimaya coast
2 temple of mystery
4 forest
1 mountain

2 arbor colossus
3 whisperwood elemental
3 nylea’s disciple
1 reclamation sage
2 stubborn denial
1 ugin, the spirit dragon
3 nissa, worldwaker

ugh I hate standard but I love UB control so I thunked this up on the train. I haven't played very much new standard but I talked to a couple friends and borrowed the RW token aggro the other day to help a friend test. My mate says UB beats whips and slow junk decks so maybe I'd have fun actually.
Looking for room for 2 of the 4cmc or greater counter.

2 ugin
1 ancient

4 bile blight
4 heroes downfall
2 thoughtseize
1 despise
4 dissolve

3 vault
2 crux

4 dig
1 cruise
4 divination
32 cardz

I figure I'd play something like 27 lands with like 10 coming into play tapped and 6 fetches?

SB would probably be the transformer one where you fuck them up with creatures, probably a thoughtseize and a despise -2/-2 sweeper, maybe the awful lifelink guy.

don't play my above list the mana sucks.

i would play R/W without hordeling outburst and with brimaz if i had to play something tomorrow.

RUG delver with shocklands is still fine
ur delver is fairly cheap as well, as legacy decks go. Problem with elves is you sink a bunch of money into cradles that you can't play in anything else. Problem with goblins is that goblins is a bad deck

Friend recently got a promotion at his job and is training for his new position for the next 6 weeks on fridays. He plays FNM with this list but lent it to me as I have been out of standard for a while. I plan on playing Abzan but I know this needs work. Any suggestions?

(ps: I only have ktk block stuff & would prefer to keep the list mostly intact for his sake & I'm also a bit lazy. Keep changes under a dozen & restrict them to ktk/cheap theros stuff)

1 banishing light
1 murderous cut
4 abzan charm
1 utter end
4 thoughtseize
1 read the bones
2 duneblast
4 hero's downfall
1 dragonlord dromoka
2 tasigur, the golden fang
4 courser of kruphix
4 siege rhino
1 liliana vess
2 elspeth, sun's champion
2 sorin, solemn visitor
1 garruk, apex predator

Mild necro for those rotation brews. Friend was super into allies their first time around and wants to play them again but hates making his own decklists. Here's what I've got after like two playtests:

Collected Abzan Allies

Creatures (27)
4 Expedition Envoy #Elite Vanguard
4 Kor Bladewhirl #2/2 first strike
4 Kalastria Healer #1/2 drain 1
4 Zulaport Cutthroat #1/1 blood artist
4 Lantern Scout #3/2 Lifelink
4 Veteran Warleader #x/x tap abilities
3 Drana, Liberator of Malakir

Spells (8)
3 Collected Company
3 Dromoka's Command
2 Evolutionary Leap

Planeswalkers (2)
2 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar

Lands (23)
4 Ally Encampment
4 Windswept Heath
3 Canopy Vista
3 Caves of Koilos
3 Llanowar Wastes
3 Shambling Vents
2 Plains
1 Forest

Looking at the allies I think you either go wide with this deck for drana, veteran warleader, and both kalastria healer and zulaport cutthroat to flex their muscles best, or powerful 'combo' naya for the double strike, haste, and +2/+2 allies.

The general plan is simple- run out some kind of curve, and if they stabilize in some manner finish with large veteran warleaders or drain triggers.

Creature selection is fairly straightforward- I believe the 2/3 vigilance-rally is too clunky and a sideboard ability at best. Consideration was given to both Drana's Emissary and Serene Steward but I think the elite vanguards are too powerful on-curve to cut, the deck can't risk too many threes, and steward is trying to get just a little too cute- the magical christmas land of VALUE these creatures can assemble is shiny though.

Spells I've gone back and forth on- valorous stance will likely be super-good in the coming environment, but I don't think saving a single creature is viable for this particular deck, and slotting a pure kill spell just isn't worth it- Dromoka's command, on the other hand, does quite a few things and has been good to amazing every time I cast it. Gideon and Collected Company

Evolutionary leap is my tech that others brewing this seem to ignore- pay green, sac a guy, drain your opponent, find a guy, rally trigger (drain your opponent) can really add up with multiple enforcers / healers. This is where the serene steward looked really fancy- multiple lifegain triggers a turn stacked up the +1/+1 counters real fast, but stunted your spells, and this deck squeezes its mana very hard already.

I'm pretty terrible with mana bases, honestly, but I think I fiddled this one into an ok spot- Drana is very color-demanding, and you can't use ally encampment to cast dromoka's command, gideon, or activate evolutionary leap. I opted for the greedy third shambling vent over fourth canopy vista because playing so few basics makes the new dual rarely enter untapped, and the manland's usual deal of a resilient threat is great! The deck needs to play some basic plains/forests to curve out with reasonable consistency, but playing any swamps is a mistake if there are painlands available- the deck will gain plenty of life with drain triggers and lantern scout's lifelink, and you can't fetch them in any way.

Minor tips:
  • Activate your manland before you trigger rally (d'oh)
  • Tap evolutionary leap fodder to veteran warleader for free abilities (double d'oh)
  • Collecting into two drain effects can change your math super-drastically; main phase if ok.
WHERE THEM BFZ BREWS AT

If I can get the cards (mostly mana-base) ready, I think this is what I'll be playing at FNM for a few weeks, super rough draft:

Grixis Dragons

Lands (26)
4 Smoldering Marsh
4 Sunken Hollow
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Polluted Delta
1 Flooded Strand
2 Shivan Reef
2 Island
2 Swamp
2 Mountain
1 Haven of the Spirit Dragon

Creatures (12)
4 Hangarback Walker
1 Dragonlord Silumgar
2 Silumgar, the Drifting Death
2 Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury
3 Thunderbreak Regent

Spells (19)
2 Roast
2 Dig Through Time
3 Silumgar's Scorn
2 Ruinous Path
2 Kolaghan's Command
3 Languish
1 Brutal Expulsion
1 Disdainful Stroke
2 Clash of Wills
1 Dragonlord's Prerogative

Planeswalkers (3)
2 x Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
1 x Ob Nixilis, Reignited

Sideboard (15)
2 Crux of Fate
2 Horribly Awry
1 Dispel
1 Kolaghan's Command
1 Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
2 Scatter to the Winds
1 Disdainful Stroke
1 Ruinous Path
2 Icefall Regent
2 Draconic Roar

I like where the mainboard looks to be thus far, probably going to be tinkering with sideboard all of this week. I just really want to play FRF Silumgar into a dashed Kolaghan. It just seems so sweet.

I've been thinking up something like this Jund list for a bit

Just Jund 'em Out

Creatures (18)
4 Hangarback Walker
4 Abbot of Keral Keep
4 Den Protector
4 Deathmist Raptor
2 Nissa, Vastwood Seer

Spells (17)
4 Ruinous Path
3 Kolaghan's Command
3 Exquisite Firecraft
3 Painful Truths
2 Radiant Flames
2 Ob Nixilis, Reignited

Lands (25)
25 Lands

With the idea being that almost nothing in it costs more than 3 mana apart from the Planeswalkers, but can have a large impact even if drawn late. I think something like Endless One could fit in as well, and things like Outpost Siege from the sideboard. I also want to try Ire Shaman with Den Protector and Deathmist Raptor.

Deathmist in particular seems pretty well positioned, with Anger of the Gods leaving and Abzan's manabase losing two of the temples, so Abzan Charm is a little less reliable.

Unfortunately if you look at the list you'll probably notice that every card I've put down is a rare or mythic, and I don't really play enough standard to get the cards together.

I don't really play standard (although i'll borrow a deck or whatever) but here's what I'm playing in proxy modern (-1 Simic Charm +1 Darkblast). It is so, so fun! a real shame it would cost like $2k to buy for real, and that's shardless sultai money

Also I've been working on this Monastery Mentor brew (modern is appealing to me a lot more lately) and I almost feel favoured against jund/grixis/junk. It's weird but I think it's more than loving my own deck. I'm testing 2x Abbot and it's been pretty solid also but i think this is The List atm,
(also, no lilis since they cost as much as the deck does online but The List eventually wants 2-3 of her.)

Mardu Mentor

Creatures (11)
4 Dark Confidant
3 Monastery Mentor
3 Young Pyromancer
1 Grim Lavamancer

Planeswalkers (2)
1 Ajani Vengeant
1 Sorin, Solemn Visitor

Spells (24)
3 Inquisition of Kozilek
2 Thoughtseize
4 Path to Exile
4 Lightning Bolt
2 Lightning Helix
2 Terminate
2 Kolaghan's Command
1 Crackling Doom
4 Lingering Souls

Lands (23)
2 Blood Crypt
2 Sacred Foundry
1 Godless Shrine
4 Bloodstained Mire
3 Arid Mesa
2 Ghost Quarter
1 Vault of the Archangel
2 Lavaclaw Reaches #(replace w/ w/b manland when it comes out)
1 Mountain
2 Plains
2 Swamp
1 Urborg, Tomb of Mall Goths

Sideboard (15)
2 Leyline of the Void
2 Leyline of Sanctity
1 Kor Firewalker
2 Timely Reinforcements
1 Sowing Salt
2 Wear//Tear
1 Stony Silence
1 Blood Baron of Vizkopa
1 Isochron Scepter
1 Persecute
1 Crackling Doom

Fucking hell, Skaab Ruinator works with collected company? I didn't even realize! I guess I finally am going to join team CC, because anything that helps Skaaby make a 40 is where I want to be!
