General Custom Cards: The Lab

Many of us have some cards that we wish would be reprinted in a certain way. Here's one of mine that I modified and ordered up as a custom. This one is only available as either a brown border or a foil with new art, and I prefer to avoid all of those things. I took the Vintage Master's version from MTGO and swapped in the original artwork and artist credit. The text looks a little thin, but it works.

I got this Spawn token off Magic Online. Unfortunately a few people had to endure some brief pointless games to let me get a Spawn token into play, but then I got a screenshot and modified it as needed. I life the Spawn title from Eldrazi Spawn, because the online version's title doesn't look like a real magic card. I also used AI to scale up the resolution, because it looked pixelated and fuzzy. The end result looks quite nice on the printed card.

Both of these images are lower resolution than what I used in the card order. I don't know that anybody would want this Smokestack, but I could see somebody wanting that Spawn token. Let me know if you want me to get you that.

As a bonus, I also ordered up a few other Vintage Master's cards to get the 2015 card frame. No modifications required for these. Each of those came out well, too. Arrogant Wurm ends up with different art, though - apparently John Avon originally had a branch going in front of the wurm, and they restored that in the newer versions.

Edit: I didn't think of looking at Tempest Remastered. I should have done that... I would have ordered up a Goblin Bombardment with original art and 2015 frame. Oops! There are some other goodies in that set for 2015 frame, including Cataclysm, Dream Halls, and Survival of the Fittest. I don't know if I'd want to run any of those, but it's cool to have a way to get the 2015 frame without creating my own customs.

So, now that it looks like Halana and Alena, Partners are a bit too much for my cube, I was thinking of customing up some Wildfire support in that slot. Green has a few heavy hitters at the absolute top end in my cube, and obviously you want to resolve those, so how about?

Hmm… does this need trample as well?
I was looking up this art to make my own version for cube. (Powered Vintage cube, so I'll maybe buff it a little). Has anyone read the original card? It reads insane to me. Perpetual anthem for every dinosaur in your deck, regardless if they're in play or now, as a 4/4 for 3 mana.

Oh and it triggers itself.

I think the effect - we're talking specifically about the death trigger, right? - is worth slightly more than one mana and about half a card. if the '2 mana 3/3' is worth the other half a card in your environment I think you're fine. I'm certainly not worried about making the robot more interesting once it's actually in play, because the challenge is reasons to play it at all......

It's probably fine, but it's a little odd to main deck this over the card you grab in a singleton format.

Not really? If your format has narrower answers/hate pieces, you might want to shove a wish in the maindeck instead of card that's fantastic in some games and shitty in others.

I really like Ancient Archive except that you probably run artifact hate that would be Sinkhole or better against it. What about unrestricted Cryptic Caves to avoid the feel bad moment of getting one mana land destruction?

I'm not convinced I'd run the other two.

I think the first one is much more convincing as a 2/3 or something. Grounded 1/3 is underwhelming.

Draw is ok if your cube has a lot of 1-2 mana answers that for some reason wouldn't be in the main deck. Shame it's so wordy to properly say "search deck or sideboard," which would hugely increase the playability.

What about Booster Tutor type effects rather than searching your sideboard? I find those very entertaining.

I like Ancient Archive but I don’t see why it should be an artifact except it might be a card type you forgot to remove?

No, that is on purpose. I've got a bunch of artifact synergies in my cube, and some delirium, so this has some additional upside as an artifact. Also, it's a clue, so it's an artifact, because clues are artifact.

I like the idea of pushing the power level of these cards. Cogwork Librarian is a card that I enjoy in draft, but is never going to make your deck, hence its only value is to be able to pick two cards. But what if were something not only playable but powerful? That could be a delightful tension, choosing between picking a pair of synergistic cards for my deck, or a card that is generically powerful.

So...

Slugging Slug - {1}{R}
Creature - Slug
Haste
Creatures have provoke (Whenever this creature attacks, you may have target creature defending player controls untap and block it if able.)
3/1

(God, I wish they had used provoke in sets other than literally just Legions. It's much more timing-sensitive than Fight, but it actually synergizes with things that mess with combat...)

Yeah, Legends of Runeterra uses a very similar mechanic and it created a lot of fun tension. I think the main draw for it in LoR was that there was not a lot of premium removal. But once there is better and better removal then provoke just doesn't really work. (A problem I had in LoR after more sets came out).

The trouble with Provoke is that you can't use it reliably to kill creatures with tap abilities. They can just tap down again before the declare blockers step and become safe.

Yeah provoke was one of those keywords with so much potential and they never used it again. Kind of odd. In fact it had so much potential that Hearthstone gave 100 % of all their minions provoke.

The problem with creatures with an activated ability that lets them tap to avoid being provoked is not really a problem. It’s just cool that a very small % of creatures have some sort of vigilance against being provoked.

The only real problem I saw with provoke is that if one guy has the biggest creature it will more likely stay this way than the average game. But there are many solutions to this problem if you ask me.
