Sets Shadows over Innistrad Spoilers Thread

I mean, this is Avacyn we're talking about. She prolly does great works all the time! Just her definition of "great" has... changed a little bit

She did yeah.
Also isn't the "Great Work" a term the phyrexians used? -_-

I like the subtle implication that Maeli found something ancient and evil in the wood and passed it on to his mother, who then gave it to Avacyn. v John Carpenter.

the constant heavy-handed references to warping metal are probably a phyrexian nod if anything though (or maybe emrakul's space distortion thing)

Yeah, I can't imagine Nahiri is the cause of all this. There seems to be a more sinister force at work...

Doesn't sound very phyrexian to me, honestly. Beyond the obvious corruption the angels are facing, phyrexians turn metal organic, they don't just twist it and "bend it impossibly" or whatever. I hope the fact that artifacts are supported incidentally means something slightly more far-reaching. Like, next block is artifact themed so they put some side support in this block. Either Return to Return to Mirrodin as venny said, or maybe Kaladesh? That would be an awesome place to visit.

I guess I'm really hoping that the big baddie isn't emrakul, so phyrexians is a step up in my mind. Still don't think it's them, they invade.

I agree with Sigh here, the Phyrexians corrupt, but they are much more DIRECT.

I think it's definitely Nahiri that's the cause of Avacyn's madness due to this passage:

Everything in front of her doubled. The trees, the mother and child, each blade of grass. Doubled, and then doubled again. A pounding ache ran through her head and she dropped to the ground, crumpled in pain. A field of white flashed through her eyes, followed by an image of many floating stone obelisks with intricate runes carved into their sides, moving in concert with each other...and then a normal scene resumed in front of her. Avacyn whipped her gaze around to identify the source of the attack. Few vampires had ever been powerful enough to launch such an assault. A demon lord, perhaps...

There was a soft buzzing in her ears. A constant low hum that neither raised nor lowered in volume. It was just...there, an off-tonal accompaniment to the prayers whispering in her head. The back of Avacyn's neck felt tight, and occasional involuntary shivers would shoot up from her neck through the rest of her head, as if in alarm to an attack. But no attack came. She shook her head in the hope it would clear the buzzing, but it remained in the back of her thoughts.

She's got relevant flavortext on a card:

And she's even depicted on the art of this card:

I think she straight up went to Innistrad and is getting revenge on Sorin for letting Zendikar go to shit. There's apparently some backstory behind them because when Ugin confronted Sorin about this on Tarkir he was all like well uhhh hmmm yeah.

I'm like 95% sure that Nahiri is the reason for Avacyn going crazy. Still, there's more stuff at work here with the moon and whatnot so we'll see what happens. I love Innistrad so much.

Nahiri's speciality is using stone. And the moon is made out of stone...

Or is it? I mean, we know moons are normally made of stone, but supposedly Innistrad's moon is made of silver. Or so the people of Innistrad believe. Dun dun duuuuuuun! I like where you're going with this Aston. It's pretty obvious from the art of Warped Landscape that Nahiri is behind the cryptoliths, and we know she is behind the destruction of Markov manor. Still, would she corrupt Avacyn so? Still hard for me to believe.

Edit: On the other hand, Nahiri must know Avacyn is a creation of Sorin. Seeing she seems to hate Sorin with a passion...

Woah! Weren't we talking about attractive defenders a while ago? This thing seems bonkers!

I felt like I had to make some legit posts here before I made this one:

Every time I flip this card:

I shamelessly love DFCs despite them being gimmicky nonsense. Something about that white-text planar chaos-esque frame gets me going. I run the origins walkers and have in the past attempted to run civilized scholar, loyal cathar and mayor of avabruck but nobody took the bait.

I agree, they're a sweet idea nicely realized but for cube the power level and consistency of hitting the transform is rarely there. Even Delver of Secrets can be inconsistent jank in cubes that don't emphasize instant/sorcery spells-matter. I'm running and liking Cloistered Youth so far. Arcangel Avacyn definitely looks like a go...

Looking forward to seeing all the sweet transformers in SOI whether they're good cube candidates or not.

2/2 turns into.. a 2/4? What? Sacrificing a thing (not even a creature...) gives a boost to toughness, but not power? He's holding a DAGGER even
That's the fuckin sturdiest ugly rag poncho I've ever seen to boost his toughness by 2
I mean I guess it makes sense that it doubled his defense, why else would he wear it

I feel like Pious Evangel could easily have been 2cmc. Is that wrong?

It's also worth noting that the odd sculptures in the background of Wayward Disciple are intimated to be part of the ritual that's driving Innistrad mad... You can see the full circle of those statues in the trailer.

And in that art where Nahiri is in the center of a cryptolith circle.

Isn't he one of the characters from atlantis?
Also I'm not sure I'm that desperate to have another version of zulaport cutthroat (NOT blood artist!) for this guy.

Also: I have valuable testing data on many of these cards! (well a few)

This card was actually quite sweet. I had both it and Frostburn Weird in a UR control deck last night, and opted to play it in the main to get some reps in. It performed admirably, and I flipped it once (I had a lot of walkers which is probably less than optimal. about 8 instants/sorceries), and flipping it did win me the game (Got me out of a very complicated board where it was my inferno titan + chaff vs his New Drana, New Kalitas and an 8 power Mikaeus the Lunarch)

I loved it, and there were moments were it was better and moments where it was worse than Ludvik's test subject, but I think the 4 toughness gives it the nod. So many of my early game threats grow or have 3 power off the bat that an 0/3 isn't cutting it blocking wise.

Yes this card is strong. No it's not brokenly overpowered, and if you are actually cutting baneslayer for it, it's unclear which card is stronger. Expecially if you've got exile based removal making any sort of presence in your cube this card can quite easily be dealt with, and even a regular doom blade in response to her pod trigger does good work.
I mean hey, 5 mana is a lot. you're getting your mana's worth here. Also of note is that in deference to restoration angel it can only save a creature, and flashing in her on your opponent's end step doesn't create random 3/3s they didn't see coming.
If you thought this card was broken, give it a shot (I suggest 2 printouts and a perfect fit, it allows for easy flipping), it's probably not as format ruining as you might have thought. And if you don't like transform cards, well sucks to be you. See you in a year I guess, while the rest of us cool people have fun, and talk about how sweet and flavorful these cards are :p

Yes it's good, I love that it hits non-attacking creatures unlike immolating glare, and the downside is real but not horrible. I literally saw someone play a match against it, and the first game they thought it was super overpowered, the second game they thought it was utter trash, and the 3rd game they decided it was "Strong, but alright"
I still think my suggestion to not cube like 4 of this card is probably a smart one.

The aformentioned player with Drana, Mikaeus, and Kalitas also had this gem in his 13 swamp deck (so it was probably performing better than average).
Card is good, his zombie count was a little low, but he did have 2 gravecrawlers and Fleshbag Marauder (who seems very strong with our friend here) and he was a fine resiliant attacker on his own.
I've had concerns that it's a little frustrating that he can just block forever, and no ammount of terminates can deal with it, which are somewhat valid. However, the {B}{B}{B} cost to block a creature and the simple act of holding back a 2/3 and just about anything else, combined with a fair sprinkling of exile cards (which should likely be in your environment anyways, if this card looks at all appealing to you) means that he's more than manageable. I didn't even have magma spray and I had no trouble. He's strong, but not overly so

Still no test data on black delver or the green flip guy who faux Oath of Nissa's for {2}{G} (they weren't in the pool)
